My son just purchased a one owner 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse V6. Owned by a "little old lady" (really) who serviced it by the book at the dealer since new. Oil changes every 3750 miles. She traded it in and my son bought it. It has 75K miles. We have a copy of all the service records.

It has had the timing belt, water pump and spark plugs changed at 60K. A plenum gasket was changed along with the spark plug wires due to an oil leak. The brake fluid, automatic transmission fluid , oil and coolant were changed before my son purchased the car.

Is there anything else we should do? Are there any weak spots in this car we should look out for? He has driven it about 2K since getting it and it seems fine, not using or leaking any oil.

Thanks

I would have the car checked by a trusted mechanic/shop.

Any car, new but more so used, can come with issues.

The two people I know that had eclipse's had a lot of issues with the engines not running right. But they where mid 90's cars and they were NOT maintained well at all.

Sounds like you got a good one.

Perhaps run a few tanks of fuel with a fuel system cleaner like Redline SI-1. And give it a few short oil changes like 3000 miles just for giggles.

That sounds pretty much squared away to me.

If the original owner kept the Eagle RS/As on it, I would throw those away. Horrible tires. Kumho 711s were noticeably better in all conditions. That's how bad they were.

Biggest Eclipse issues I have heard are oil consumption, paint, interior trim, warped wheels due to metal being too soft, and check engine lights due to host of issues.

Doesn't have the rep as being the most reliable car, but that doesn't mean you didn't get a good one. I'll bet that t-belt job set her back a pretty penny.

Great looking car, and fun to drive. Best of luck to you.

Never had most of those problems on the wife's 2001 Eclipse GT. The wheels however....

yeah. Those were real easy to damage. Got the repair bills from Wheel Repair By Adam to prove it. (did an awesome job)

She still regrets getting rid of that car. I've asked her if she wants to get a 4th gen Eclipse and she said, "No. I don't like the new ones. Mine looked better, it was comfortable, and I liked the way it drove."
