Questionable Castrol GTX

I have a bottle of Castrol GTX 5w-20. I asked a friend if I could have it because he wasn't going to use it. It's full, but it had been opened prior to me receiving it. I looked in it, and it looks like motor oil, but it has a strange smell. If you mixed poop and mints/menthol, it would have the same smell this oil does. I've never used castrol so I don't know what it usually smells like. Pennzoil certainly doesn't smell like that!

It's API SM, made in 2010. What are your thoughts?

I was asking mainly because of the smell.

Also, free oil is good oil as long as it is real. I just want to top off my oil for it's burned about half a quart and I would use this until next change for top offs.

If it's from your friend it's unlikely tampered with other fluids, I would use it for top off.

Once again I was just wondering if the smell is common?

Now that I think about it, I remember using autozone oil once. If I remember correctly, it smelled just like this castrol...

I understand i doubt anything is wrong with it i would use it in mower or something. But its 4 bucks why risk it in anything you would have to worry about?

I wouldn't worry too much about the smell unless its really obnoxious.

It could have been sitting next to other products and absorbed some of the aromatics.

I know that when I kept a open bottle of motor oil next to a container of paint thinner probably for a few years , when I opened the motor oil bottle (cap had split) it smelled like paint thinner even though I know that the two were not mixed.

I never thought twice about using the old oil as a top off in my engine, never had a problem.

GTX does have a different smell than most motor oil.Syntec has the same smell.I wouldn't worry too much.

I can't imagine it being much less anywhere else.

It's $5.59 a qt here @ A-Zone + $.10CRV + $.26 recycling fee +7.75%tax = $6.38 a qt at the register.
