I'm in the middle of an oil change...just pulled the plug and the filter...going to have some lunch...quick question....an old dude told me once: "after you drain the oil, start the car for 2-3 seconds and then shut if off to get all of the old oil out"...sounds like it would work, but would this damage the engine? I need you guys input before i put the new oil in (i'm changing because i'm doing a arx treatment)

BAAAAAAAAAD!

i'd rather run a couple of ounces of dirty oil then risk damage with a couple of seconds of dry starting.

and i dont tihnk starting the car would do much, leaving the car alone on a slope while draining would drain most of it.

If you want to be geezer like, put the drain plug back on but dont tighten, toss in a quart of cheap new oil i.e. Supertech or use Quaker State if your an old geezer and take the plug back off.

Does anyone know of a time or engine where the recommended proedure would have been benificial?

what else has to be said,

Simple drain the old and put in the new with a new filter. Funny how "old geezers" know a lot about fixing cars. Especially when the cars they worked on in the 70's didn't have FI, onboard computers and so on, and they lasted about as long as the warranty. 50,000 miles on average.

Pretty funny

A lot of old farts do the run for 3 seconds thing.

It's not worth the wear and tear on the engine for a few extra drops of oil.

I started changing the oil in my Uncle's cars when I was nine and he instructed me to do the aforementioned "grind and whine" technique and even then the mean rattles coming out of the engine didn't seem right. I never did it again.

thanks guys...didn't do it...got 4 fresh qts of 10w30 supertech and a regular puralator filter with 8 oz of arx...also added 2 oz to my trans! i hope my 1996 Altima with 167k on it will run to 250k with no major repairs...

There is no reason to do anything 'cept drain the oil and change the filter . No special long drain or pouring a qt. of oil etc. is necessary.

Subject: Oil Changing

To get that little extra oil out when changing try this:
When you think its all drained out
pour a quart of diesel straight in and watch the crud come off bottom of pan.

The little residue of diesel will burn off when engine gets up to temp.
Good Luck................

If you're getting extra crud by doing this, you're not changing your oil often enough, or you have other problems. And depending how much diesel is left behind, you may seriously effect the visometrics of your new oil. I would only consider this practice for highly unusual situations.

When I said crud that was an exaggeration.
It's only a little darker than the new oil.

I'm guessing that the residue diesel should only be two or three ounces.
Three ounces of diesel mixed with four or five quarts of oil would not change the viscosity that much if any and it will burn off. Now who's exaggerating ?

Have been doing this for many years
and have never had any side effects to my knowledge. ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬
