question on "universal" ATF that covers all specs

I'd like to see how Valvoline would react if someone installed MaxLife ATF into their Honda or Acura product that uses DW1 spec Honda fluid and their product caused a failure...would they stand behind that product?

LOL....I seriously doubt it.

I just checked the official Valvoline MaxLife ATF page and THEY HAVE NOT UPDATED TO INCLUDE THE Honda DW1 spec in their recommendations....Yet according to another member here their "call center" claimed it WAS suitable for using in Honda DW1 applications.

When using Honda DW-1 fluid, do you have any example where Honda stood behind and fixed the transmission?

Thought it's the other way around. Type F in regular transmission gives you hard shifts but no increased wear, but friction modified fluid in a transmission specified for type F will cause slipping clutches and extra wear.

Sorry for your problem. But seeing that MaxLife wasn't the cause of your transmission's problem. Your transmission simply failed due to GM engineering not for quality but to the lowest cost possible, it had a hard fault, that would have occured had you left your old fluid in, or even if you flushed it all out and went with ACDelco branded Dexron VI.

You even admitted that you were mad, about being treated 'coldly', and having your claim for warranty shot down. Service reps often have bad days, and that warranty only covers fault, when the fluid fails, it is not a warranty that covers 'all' faults.

Wow. You know all of this without even being in the same state as the transmission! You're good! Yea, and Valvoline didn't make MaxLife at the lowest cost possible.

No, but you refuse to even accept the possibility that your trans failed, regardless of the fluid that was or could have been in it. The symptoms and the end result, put my opinion in the far more likely than the 'the fluid ate my transmission' realm.

I understand that you are [censored], I'd be too, but you really are blaming the wrong company. That Sonoma under my care has the 'ZQ8' performance option, instead of adjusting the driveline angles, GM stuck a double cardon setup on the drive shaft, that is not only prone to expensive failure, it's prone to it often, it often takes the rear diff seal and pinion crush sleeve with it, increases driveline harshness, and it makes the drive shaft ridiculously heavy so you lose performance and fuel economy... I don't blame the U-joints or the Cardon ball/socket setup that has to get rebuilt, or the diffy pinion that leaks(requires pulling the rear end apart to set the pinion crush sleeve), I blame the bean counters at GM. Oh and it's bull.... that I have to grease those cardons every 7500km or 3 months, but that's the price you pay if you want to get more than 30,000km out of the dam* things... :|

You should have wrote this post the first time and left it at that.

You know what the say about opinions...

I can accept to believe whatever I choose. Today, at least, this is still a free country.

I believe in aliens too.

Opinions are, though one of us is right, one is wrong. Though the UOA does say that the fluid remained in specification, though the stand out being the high level of Zinc present... So without pulling the transmission apart to see, it's understandable that the guy doing the analysis figured it wasn't the fluids fault.

Oh and the odds are that the universe is too large for our planet to be the only one with life, let alone sentient life on it.

It's also incredibly late, and I'm incredibly tired, so I get to have my little soap box rants. I like that Sonoma, it's a nice little truck, it just has some very bad engineering, that is slowly getting undone, with after market help. I just have no delusions about that transmission. I've also only been let down once by Max Life in an application, and that's because I didn't read the label to see that they changed from Dex III viscosity to Dex VI viscosity(I turned the jug around and went 'doh'), made for one very grumpy VW 4spd(it requires Dex III viscosity but in a shear resistant type, not the regular kind that sheared down to Dex VI levels of viscosity rather quickly), which then got Redline D4.

Can we just make a sticky topic that states Oil Changer hates Valvoline and will bash them at any given opportunity???

That would be great! Save me time too. Let's make this happen.

Almost forgot, Valvoline sucks.

From what I've heard their universal ATF is very good. I've had good luck MaxLife which I've used.

If you put it in your signature, you'll say it everytime you make a post. That would be the best way to ensure that everybody knows your opinion of Ashland.

Great idea.
OC, do it please and stop highjacking other threads.

They do....
A) The car comes with a 3 yr 36k warranty.

and most importantly!

B) Honda tested DW1 for MILLIONS of miles in each trans model they have.

Can MaxLife or any other aftermarket claim this?

When I first bought the Fusion I put Mobil 1 ATF in it which was the Mazda MV spec. Later M1 droped that spec so I called Mobil tech and they said the ATF had not changed but they dropped several specs from their listing, but the fluid was still good for my Fusion. Today I still use Mobil 1 ATF and the trans shifts very good so I plan to continue with this fluid.

Highjacking threads? Spare me! This is an oil forum. Someone asks an opinion on oil. I give mine if I feel like it. Sometimes someone quotes my opinion and makes a comment directed towards me. Sometimes I respond, sometimes I don't.

Now, if I wrote, "Valvoline sucks" in every thread in this sub-forum, you would have a point. I don't do that. So, please...

So your positive that using max life caused the failure, and had you done exactly what you did with oem fluid this failure wouldn't have happened?
So I also assume you can prove it was valvolines fluid failure, and not an internal transmission issue.
Has anyone ever told you that if an automatic transmission hasn't had the fluid changed by 100000 miles then its not a good idea to change it. Or did you just jump in blindly.
And since you didn't have the transmission torn apart to find the root cause of failure then all you really have is an opinion that one of the most widely used transmission fluids on our continent caused a failure in YOUR transmission and no one else's.
I would think if the fluid was at fault there would be more failures, don't you think, however yours was the only one that we hear about that failed.
Stop crying. It's over. Buy a Honda next time,or maybe a ford.

The type F also goes in Borg-warner transmissions used in 80's Jaguars.

That sheet says "suitable". Amalie has a Universal ATF that includes CVT in its "suitable" list. They lose a lot of respectability in my eyes that way.

There are different terms used in the industry

Approved
Meets or exceeds
Recommended
Suitable

Each has its own definition. The additive company gives the blender the list of the first three.
