Question for Toyota Experts?

Today I attended the Motor Trend Auto show in my city. While looking at the new 2017 Toyota's on display I noticed that underneath the hood on the 2017 Camry with the 2GRFE V6 Camry the oil spec on the cap specified 0W-20 viscocity. I have a 2009 Camry with the exact same 2GRFE V6. On my oil cap it specifies 5w30 Spec viscocity. My question is I have a lot of 5W-20 oil in my stash that I want to use up. Would running the 5W-20 spec oil in my 2009 Camry V6 be bad for my engine?

I doubt it would be bad. Probably the only thing you won't like about it is the extra noise from the engine. A good time to run it is in the winter time. But I'm sure the summer time will be fine as well. Try it and see how you like it. The Matrix is spec'd for 5w30 and it currently has 0w20 in it.

Unless Toyota back speck'ed your engine for 5/0w-20 I would keep using 5w30.

If I were just looking in the owner's manual, then no I would not use it. However, below I have the Toyota oil chart. It allows for 5w20 and the 2GRFE does now call for 0w20. In this case, since the Toyota chart has back-specced it, I'd use up the oil you have but in the future use a 5w30 when you buy it in store. I also have a screenshot below of your car's owner's manual.

Unwise. EXAMPLE: Even though the Prius G1 and G2 used the same 1.5 liter engine, and both originally used 5w30, only the G2 was approved to "downgrade" to 0W-20. The G1 is still spec'd for 5w30.

Similarly your 2009 Camry might APPEAR to be the same engine as the 2017 model, but there might be subtle differences only Toyota knows about, so the older Camry cannot run thinner oil.

The G2 is not backspaced according to Toyota USA.

Additionally they stated that the TGMO application guide with all the dots is not a Toyota USA produced chart.

The official document appears that the 2GR-FE in the Camry was not approved for 0/20 until 2012.

Like the chart shows, 5W20 will be fine. My 2012 Highlander has this engine and I've always run 0W20 in it. It isn't noisy. I see some are questioning the validity of the chart, but if it were MY vehicle I'd either run the 5W20 or buy a little 5w30 or 5w40 of the same brand and mix it so that I could use up the 5w20 stash. I would feel comfortable doing either.

Yeah I stopped listening to Toyota USA when they voided thousands of customers' sludged engines. I now go straight to the source: Toyota Japan. BESIDES this looks like an official document to me, especially since it has "Toyota Genuine Parts" right on the corner.
