Id keep it rather than swap..however a 2 tier system would be my 1st choice if that were to be an option.

Keep it! It's not perfect yet is better than most countries.
Some wealthy types fly elsewhere and foot the bill, rather than wait a couple months for an operation.

Unless you bring in tax relief to the discussion, the question lacks context.
I estimate I pay 60% of gross wages in taxes, federal, provincial, sales tax, property tax, waste water fees etc.
Give me $ situation before and I can give you an answer.
What I will say is a closed system such as health care does not benefit from a competitive market.
Anyone that says competition has no role to play in health care ... enough said.

Canadian expat here, lived for years in both countries, have friends and relatives on both sides of the border.

Not Canadian however my coworkers all are. I mention going to the dr and most state for that is it really worth the wait time there. They do not realize I can make a same day appointment and see someone if something pressing with a 15 wait tops. Our insurance thru wife's employer has no copay.

So the insurance your employer offers sucks so your on your wifes, passing the buck to her employer? Would there be any wait time and co-pay if you had to take what your employer offered?

Good point about the taxes. We pay alot for what we have. Personally I dont use the health system much (thankfully and luckily) but we do pay enormous amounts in taxes..so you are correct, it would be important to know if we didnt lose 50-60% of salary on taxes I would likely make more money every year.

i did not know we had a choice, because at my work i was told i had to use my insurance and my wife had to use the insurance where she works(long story and we in the usa, so sorry to add to your questions for canadians only, but i wanted to insert this tid bit)

If you're married, you both have to have (pay if necessary) for health insurance, & both may (or may not) pay. I'm not Canadian, but our recent healthcare system costs are skyrocketing for less care here in the USA, I'm not sure Canada's system could be a lot worse! Avoiding the BITOG political 3rd rail reason, of course.

Heh! I was going to mention earlier that OHIP should charge the patient 1 buck for each complaint. That would cut down on the number of lonely old ladies visiting their GPs...
For the benefit of the OP, general practitioners in Ontario are contractors - They get paid by the province on a 'per visit, per medical complaint' basis. I seem to think GPs can only charge for up to 5 medical issues per visit?
However, I may be wrong on this - I visit my family doctor as seldom as possible...
