I’m about to do an oil change and want to get a sample for analysis. My car has a dry sump engine. Most of the oil is in the tank, but there is a quart or two in the crankcase. Both get drained during an oil change. Does it matter which source I use for the oil analysis? I’m thinking no, but am open to comments…

Thanks

What kind of car?
In either case, my guess is to use the drain from the crankcase. Since that's where everyone else gets it, your numbers should be more comparable that way.

I would say wherever it is easier to get a "clean" sample. By "clean" I mean devoid of contaminants from the outside.

I was thinking crankcase as well. I think both places are equally clean.

Thanks.
