Hello,

I am trying out Rotella T 5w40 in my Jeep Wrangler 4.0 as I have read some good reviews about HDEO in the 4.0 engine. For most of the jeep's life, it has been using PYB 10w30. I have read that the HDEO will 'clean' out the motor more. Does anyone recommend me changing the oil filter early, or will it be fine throughout the OCI?

Thanks

Ok to run the filter for the whole OCI.

Honestly, I don't know that you'll get that much more cleaning with the HDEO, only because if you've been using PYB for a long time, it's already been well cleaned.

But using RTS certainly cannot hurt, other than a nearly-imperceptible loss of fuel economy from the thicker vis.

thanks for the quick reply. Yeah I didn't know how much (if at all) it would help, but I wanted to try out 5w for the cold starts this winter and figured it wouldn't hurt

I have also been thinking about changine over to HDEO oil in my other 2 vehicles, is there anyone reason why it would be bad. I am taking synthetic vs synthetic, say Pennzoil plat or synpower vs Rotella T syn, Weights would be 5w30 vs 5w40 and my 2 gas vehicles is a honda 4 cyl with 150,000 miles and a 96 chevy v-8 vortec with 90,000 miles. My tohught is there is more additives, phos, zinc and cal vs regular oil and should be a longer drain interval or at least a higher quality oil at change time.

Penz 10W30

Viscosity@40C: 69.7
Viscosity@100C: 10.53
Cold-Crank Viscosity (-25C): 6,170
Cold Pump viscosity (-30C): 15,400

-----

Rotella 5w40

Viscosity@40C: 95
Viscosity@100C: 15.5
Cold-Crank Viscosity (-30C): 6,400
Cold Pump viscosity (-35C): 28,000

------

I don't think there is going to be much difference in cold starts between these 2 oils. (notice, the Rotella cold ratings are taken 5 degrees colder, but the viscosity is higher.)

If you are concerned about cold starts but want thicker operating temp viscosity, I would say go with GC.
