Just wondering if there was a chart or any info on back specing for hondas. reason I'm asking is, I have a honda accord 1994 ex f22b1, and was wondering if honda back speced it for lighter oil or not? Thanks.

I run ours on 10W30 Amsoil, at 235K, it runs beautifully, the VTEC has worked better and better since the switch to Amsoil, its quieter too.

Great cars. fun to drive with the 5 speed!

I have to agree here. I have and recently sold a 1992 Acura Integra LS which isnt the same as your accord but any 30 went in it. I had did the 5W in the winter and 10W in the summer thing. Nice smooth engine that is easy on the oil. The 30 always worked well for me so, there is that.

Honda did not bother to spec the old 2.2 for twenty grades, although it would probably be fine with one.
When you consider that the latest of these cars is now fifteen years old, I'm not too surprised.
This engine would likely do just fine on a twnety grade oil, but why bother?
These engine runs well, deliver good fuel economy, have low oil consumption and live long lives on a thirty grade oil.
The one in my sig has done all of the above.
Why even consider using a twenty?

I have a 99 accord f23a1 spec'ed for sj 5w-30. It had nothin but dino castro gtx for the first 115k, sometimes it has had 10w-30 in the summer...it gets hot here 105° daily in the summer. I switched it to PP 5w-30 and stuck with that for years until the last oil change it got chevron supreme synthetic 5w-30. Seems to like it...runs real smooth! The chevron supreme synthetic is service raited sm.

Reason I ask is because: 1. supposed to get better fuel econemy. 2. from what I've read back then in the 90's oil sheared down to 20 weight from 30 after about 2000 miles. And 3, allot of manufactures have back speced their vechiles to 20 weight. But I guess the accord wasn't one of them.

If you drive under 5 miles one way regularly, you may see a 1 mpg improvement. If you want to try a 5w20 try the one in my sig - DEFY. It's a thick 20 and it has boosted EP and AW stuff. Smooth running oil. My lil FIT HATED high end super light synthetic IDEMITSU 0w20. Knocking, oil consumption and low power. All racket went away with a DUMP of the GARBAGE factory honeywell filter (replacing it with the excellent for this app: WIX 57356)and running the semisyn DEFY 5w20. Now that break in is about done I may try QSUD or Kendall synthetic.

I wouldn't change anything. If you're really curious, you could try one run on 20w and keep an eye on it.

I've read my D16Y8 is back spec'd for 5w20 but since I've had no issues with 5w30, I haven't considered it. I'd rather just leave well enough alone.
