Quaker State

I hear a lot of folks around here say that most conventional oils are about the same and all are pretty good. But it seems like I don't see much about Quaker State around here. My dad was always a QS guy way back in the day, though I've never really used it.

Been using Castrol GTX 5w-20 in the wife's RAV4, but it seems like QS is a bit cheaper in my neck-of-the-woods. Any love for QS conventional out there?

Go with Quaker State. I would.

I would not hesitate to use QS conventional if it was less expensive. Or any conventional oil on sale. There is not a big difference between them overall.

But, QS is a good oil. I've run the conventional and synthetic with no issues.

Quaker State Conventional is a very respected oil. In my opinion its a better oil than gtx.

Quaker state is really under-rated. If you are getting it cheaper than what you are using now then by all means switch over. Their synthetic is great oil as well,and can usually be found for a good price when compared to other synthetics.

I normally use QS Advanced Durability in my truck. I have been using QS conventional for a long time. It is an excellent oil, IMHO it is one of the better name brand conventional oils. QS has a good amount of boron in it, which can be beneficial for engine seals. My truck runs very smooth and quiet on QS. I am using Kendall GT-1 in my current oil fill, because I just wanted to try something different and use a semi-synthetic this last time. The GT-1 has been very good too but when it is done I will switch back my current stash of QS.

Another good thing about QS is it can usually be found on sale for a good price at one store or another most all of the time. The QS in my current stash only cost me $2.17 per quart during a 5 quarts with Purolator Classic filter deal at AAP a couple of years ago.

It would be bending the truth to say its better than GTX. If you can get it cheaper though then why not. If they were the same price, would go with GTX.

Quaker State Conventional has a higher tbn, and boron. All GTX has is a good shot of calcium and some sodium.

I think Valvoline conventional and gtx are almost identical as far as add packs go. I think Quaker State Conventional is a better oil however I doubt a person would notice any actual differences in an engine.

I looked at Quaker state bottle and it said API mark like "SM" but did not say GL4, GL5. Not sure if it is certified. It mentions meeting some wear tests.

AFAIK, Quaker State Conventional is the No. 1-selling oil in Canada. At my work (CT), it's become our 'featured' oil, and is promoted even more than our house-brand.

It's an excellent oil.

My Quaker State Advanced Durability (green bottle) is SN, GF-5.

What's really interesting is that I never thought too much about oil until I really started poking around this site. I've gained a lot of knowledge very quickly, but in some ways I'm actually more confused about some things simply because of the staggering amount of info around here.

Castrol likes to market their conventional oil has great for stop-and-go, short distance driving type driving. Even says so on the bottle. That's one of the reasons I'm using it now in the wife's car. She's 90% in-city driving and sometimes short trips as well. Perhaps I'm falling for the ad-hype....I don't know.

If thats the case and synthetic is off the table I would choose Pennzoil Conventional or Quaker State Conventional and 3k ocis.
If a synthetic is a choice, Quaker State Ultimate Durability and 5k ocis.
Sounds like you have a very severe service cycle

Another great and very economical conventional oil is Mobil super 5000. in my opinion its superior to both Quaker State Conventional and Castrol GTX, and its also cheaper.
