Quaker State Syn vs. Quaker State Conventional

I have been doing some reading over at the Hyundai forums about the 2.4 GEMA engines. Seems like a lot of folks in the Hyundai world like Quaker State oil for their engines in recent years.

I am due for an OCI and considering trying some Quaker State oil in 5w20 for my Jeep Compass 2.4 which has the GEMA engine. Up until now, I have religiously been using PP and Mobil (the PP always seems quieter).

The question: IF the selection for Quaker State is decided for the next OCI, would I do better with their Synthetic formula, or conventional?

p.s. Haven't used Quaker State Conventional in about 10 years....when I last had a Subaru Outback. At that time, the oil seemed noisy and got very black in a short amount of time. I dumped it after about 1500 miles.

Whats your OCI with the syn you been using? I would just use the PP like you have been.You can use QSGP for 5000 or the syn for 7500 or longer but it seems you already don't like it.I guess I don't understand your reasoning behind what you are proposing.

Both of those are excellent oils! You can't go wrong with either one, it would just depend of how long of an OCI you would want to run.

I ran Quaker State Conventional in my old car a couple years ago. It was always at a fair price and the engine was extremely smooth on it.

Use either, just be sure to vary your OCI accordingly.

OCI on my Jeep dings at 3500 mi.

I tend to stretch it to 5000 maximum. Will give the syn a try, if you think it might be worthwhile.


btw: does Shell/Pennzoil still own QS?

Greg, yes, QS is still the sister product to Pennzoil.

This is a "Theta" motor. Hyundai went their own route after collaborating on the GEMA motors. Quaker State Conventional is sufficient, but OCI should be kept shorter due to fuel dilution issues with the GDI engines. I would not extend them with Quaker State Ultimate Durability either.
I advise my customers to change oil every 3750 miles, and if going longer, closely monitor oil level and condition.
