So the wife and I are browsing Walmart tonite, she's buying a Dremel to do our greyhound's toenails. The oil aisle is nearby....

"So Mr. Oil-Smarty, here's an oil quiz." Rips the quiz off a QS jug.

Myth or Fact:
1. If the oil is dark or black when drained, this indicates a problem.
2. Using synthetic oil will void a manufacturer's warranty.
3. You can switch from synthetic oil to conventional oil or vice versa anytime you want.
4. Thicker oil is better for your engine and increases engine life.

I got them all right.

My greyhounds freak out when I try to use a Dremel on them. I got a battery powered one but I can't get near them with it. Good luck!

Not so fast, there. Like all myths, there's some basis of truth in this one. Reality check: if the owner intends to justify synthetics' pricing with extended oil change intervals past the owner's manual recommendations, most U.S. automakers say you're on your own if your engine takes a dump. Even Quaker State's 10yr./250,000 "warranty" is contingent on 4,000 mile oil changes regardless of type of Quaker State oil used.

We live rather far from town and find that a Dremel is great for minor dentistry on the kids. Saves a lot too!!

True, but every bottle of synthetic I've ever seen has a CYA on the label saying to follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

The question was: "Using synthetic oil will void a manufacturer's warranty...". This is a myth; no where does the question mention anything about using synthetic oil longer than the manufacturer's recommended OCI, only its use.
