That`s definitely the way both Quaker State and Pennzoil Conventional smell. I bet it`s the same oil in both bottles. It`s also the same color too.



How can that be if they have a totally different smell? Something is different somewhere.

I recently chose Quaker State Advanced Durability over Pennzoil Conventional 5w20, b/c of the slightly better cold-cranking specs for Quaker State Advanced Durability over PYB:

Quaker State Advanced Durability: 4730ccs@-30
PYB: 5100ccs@-30

Price was pretty well the same, so I literally used this tiny difference to justify the Quaker State Advanced Durability, LOL. Engine runs smooth and fine so far!

I believe it primarily comes along with the base stock in motor oil. The sulfur level in a base stock can be effected by the initial feedstock, amount and type of processing. Some additives also contain sulfur. Especially additives used in gear oils.

In motor oils, most of the sulfur comes from the additives, specifically sulfonate detergents and ZDDP. Group I base oils have a small amount of sulfur, but Group II and IIIs have very little if any.

I will keep using Pennzoil conventional as in my area its $15.50 currently at Walmart.

Here in Houston at Wally Pennzoil Conventional is $14, Quaker State Conventional is $13.75, and Mobil Super 5000 is $13.97. My money goes to Houston based SOPUS and Pennzoil Conventional.
