I have wanted a Nissan Altima for awhile now. I went looking this am and found the one i want, haven't dropped the hammer yet but may by next weekend.I haven't found many complaints about the 2.5L 4cyl and this is the engine i would like to have. In short how good are these engines?

They are probably dealing on the new 2012's since the 2013 is what they are pushing now. We keep getting e-mails to trade our 2010 for the new 2013.

The engine is solid. We have almost 60K on our 2010. Just change the oil and filter every 6K miles. If it uses any oil, it's imperceptible.

I think it sounds like a tractor, but my wife wanted it and drives it every day. It gets really great fuel economy with the CVT, so it's not all bad.

The 2012 is a safe bet ,and a very nice car to drive IMO.
The 2002-2006 2.5's had some serious issues with intake butterfly screws coming loose ,and getting sucked in the intake destroying engines.

They also had issues with cat material making its way into the engine and getting suck in also destroying motors.

Nissan did heavy revisions to the QR25DE for the 2007 model year ,and they have been solid since.

My mom has a 2007 with 85k trouble free miles . No oil consumption. This engine combined with the CVT is a nice combo. Very good midrange passing power and good fuel economy.

Great little engine , gets pretty good gas mileage as well. I recommend following Nissan's severe schedule unless you are doing over 80% hwy. 3750 miles OCI with a quality conventional. We have alot of customers with 2.5 Altimas running VWB for 3-4k intervals and the engines look spotless through the filler hole.

I did the test drive and almost signed the papers but had prior commitments and didn't have time. I don't think i have ever driven a smoother car. The only issue i was warned about was that in previous years the timing belt wasn't that durable but haven't seen anything to confirm this so i was a bit concerned.

2013 will be a much better car, I would definitely wait. The next-gen CVT should be a better performer.

My mom has a 2010 and the design is already a bit dated compared to the newest players.

Upon further inspection i now know they use timimg chains not belts. Nothing to fear there.

I do like the redesign of the'13.

If it's any consolation, I have an '04 Altima 2.5S w/QR25DE and I really love this car. I have had all recalls satisfied thus far and no issues. I had the Intake Screw Recall satisfied when the car was first new, the Cam Timing Recall and the Rear Subframe Recall.

I have not had any front Cat Conv issues yet and I hope that I don't because, I really love this car! I'm sure that each generation of Altima will be better than the last. I hope Nissan doesn't screw things up as they really have something here with the Altima.

The truth is for the most part the 2.5 engine itself was always solid, but it was those components that would fail and ruin a otherwise good motor. I would look into deleting the front cat ,and you should have nothing to worry about after that.

Can't delete the Cat here in NY State. It'd be nice if it were that easy!

Yeah, stay away from early ones. I had a 2002 SE-R and the engine used oil like crazy. Nissan would not stand behind the butterfly screw issues.

Ya know, I'd change the Front Cat Conv in my '04 Altima if I thought my engine was in real danger. But, even in NYS, they're not supposed to replace a perfectly good converter for no reason, just because of an owner who thinks that it may cause an engine issue.

I think if I lived there, I would secretly put a dent in the OEM cat, and say it was damaged by road debris. They would have to let me replace it, right?

This.

The 07+ QR is considered to be built very well and I wouldn't hesitate to buy a car with one. The 02-06 QR I would be a little more cautious but they can good too, as long as the aforementioned faults have been addressed.
