Earth? I think.
From the Pennzoil Q&A:

Can someone give me a better "definition" around "Complete Protection" in regards to what tribologist/chemist/engineers deem most critical to motor oil performance?
Rather than what consumers deem most critical.

Just curious on anyone's response to this :P

Lol.
I would expect that to be more of a management/project lead response :P

Mine would be:

1. Wear protection
2. Corrosion protection
3. Sludge protection
4. Fuel economy
5. Varnish protection
6. Oil consumption
7. Extreme environment suitability

And Tom knows something about making oils

I will borrow Tom's list with a slight adjustment. Fuel economy and sludge protection switching places

You can't order any parameters, as they all need to be met in order to certify an oil. But, I suppose there are some things like biodegradability that aren't strict requirements, rather optionals. these would have a lower priority.

"Complete protection" to me implies no deterioration AT ALL of any of the parameters of interest during the recommended OCI. Doesn't seem very likely to happen.

Complete based on the list of parameters covered doesn't make sense. It would only make sense if the extent of the protection was also quantified.

So it doesn't mean anything.

What a great question and open to so many different interpretations. I am sure that Woody Allen and Bill Clinton would have different definitions. I think a good reference is what is important to the OEMs for warranty requirements. If say an oil passes dexros requirements it would provide "complete protection for GM vehicles". More information on OEM requirements is available on the net. Also see:

For PCMO I agree with Tom's List but for HDDEO I would probably rearrange to:

1. Wear protection
2. Sludge protection
3. Varnish protection
4. Corrosion protection
5. Fuel economy
6. Oil consumption
7. Extreme environment suitability

Protection is another one of those weasel words that could imply many things.

In my strict interpretation "protection" means shielding against or prevention from...

which in reality there is no such thing.

We can only reduce or hope to minimize the following: wear, oxidation, decrease fuel consumption, etc., etc. through the judicious selection of appropriate chemistries.
