Regarding 2011-2014 Ford F150's w/ the 5.0 Coyote, how does Ford determine the OCI?

Does Ford use similar OLM algorithm like GM, or just mileage based on normal/severe duty service?

Particular to 2014 FX4 models, does the dash computer show % oil life left?

What are typical OCI's for owners running quality oil/filters?

I may be able to buy a 2014 FX4 SCREW from a friend in Jan. Truck will be out of the3/36 warranty. I'm guessing Ford has 5/60 powertrain warranty. The truck on question will prob have around 36k miles by Jan. Owner has used M1 5w-20 since purchased new.

Thanks for your input.

I don't know the particular parameters, but its supposed to be an IOLM (as described in the owners manual). My truck sees pretty consistent operating conditions and I routinely change at 10-20% which works out to right around 8500 miles.

Some long discussions on this on the F150 forums I go to. Basically the OLM in our F150s is set for 6 months or 16000km(10k miles), whichever comes first. You can see this on a long trip, where it counts down 1% for every 160km (100 mi), or when you leave it at an airport for a week or two and it is counting down the entire time.

But there ARE additional algorithms that will shorten those intervals based on usage. My last change was at 8% and 14800km (9200 mi) of mostly highway driving, so would have come out right at 16000km (10000mi).

Also, the IOLM is set for dino oil, and that if you use synthetic it can probably go longer - (insert the powertrain warranty discussion here).

Yes, there should be an option to view oil life. On mine it's the bottom option and you have to go into the menus a little to find it.

Most people I've seen go by the IOLM; it's a no brainer and there are warnings as it gets close. I have seen some using synthetic that are going to 120 or 130%. Planning to do the same on my next OCI, based on what I see in the UOA.

Ford's IOLM was designed for Motorcraft synthetic blend & Motorcraft oil filters. Use a quality synthetic blend or full synthetic & follow the IOLM. Ford's recommended OCI is 7,500 miles or 1 year, or follow the IOLM.

IOLM monitors driving habits & conditions to determine oil life.

The only engines that got a time/mileage based ones are the 6.2's - they got the "dumb" OLM.

The rest use an algorithm that accounts for load and such. And it does work.

I've got an '11 Ecoboost and here's my example. We tow a 35', 9k lb camper with ours (it has the Max Tow package).

On August 22 I changed the oil at 60,866 miles. Today, at around 64k the IOLM says I'm at 60% life left. I've traveled about 3,100 miles and based on time/mileage I should be at 69%. But we towed the camper back and forth to the Outer Banks , did a bunch of other local trips with it and worked the engine hard. So it definitely does account for that use.

I've been sticking with 6mo or the IOLM for the OCI on this since we work it hard. I use Pennzoil Ultra and so far so good.

But the IOLM is safe to follow.
