That's what I did and the shifter goes through the gears much easier in the cold winter here. Must be staying thinner in the cold. I have no issues with syncros going wrong. When I was using the dealers syncromesh fluid witch I think is just a special name for a motor oil the syncros 2 and 4 would grind going into gear when cold. Now I don't have this issue with the atf.

I have attempted to warn people that the thinnest fluid in manual trannys may not be the best because the ATF's don't contain high enough levels of EP and AW adds.

The Castrol type F has an approx. 7 cSt viscosity which results in less shifter and synchro resistance during cold weather, but may not have the proper EP, AW adds, and friction modifiers.

For an OTC oil, try Pennzoil Synchromesh for GM and Chrysler manual trannys.

From our sponsors, you may want to try the Redline MTL which has good EP adds and the proper friction modification.

The tranny feels and runs much nicer so am I realy doing any harm to it.
Plus I'll just change it every 6 months.
It only takes 1.8 L and at 2 dollars a bottle it's no big deal.

Any idea of where to find the Penzoil or anything not at the dealer. I have had no luck.

Amsoil S3000 5w30 HD diesel oil can be used in place of the syncomesh oil. the synco is a semi-syn, ford's, gm's and dodge's are all the same oil. I use the amsoil in my 99 dakota 5sp. Amsoil recommends the s3k for this application.
ATF is a very thin oil and you will cause excessive wear by using it.

I have looked into that, but the only place that has it is a speed shop and they want 20 dollars a bottle for it. I will not pay that price for 1 quart.

Rick, I agree with the above posters, in that you shouldn't use the Type F ATF. In addition to the reasons that were mentioned, Type F is an older designed fluid, and does not have many friction modifiers in it. There's a danger of excessive wear if you use it, and I wouldn't take the chance.

I would try a full synthetic oil, that's compatible with the syncromesh fluid specs.

Ok, would you then be able to give me some examples of some oils that should be ok in my tranny?
Maby Dex 3 ?
