Purpose of 1/2" Chrome?

You can never have enough different types of sockets when doing a job. The moment you are blocked removing a fastener you are losing time and possibility money.

1/2 chrome are thinner walled vs impact, someone mentioned head bolts. I have run across several times when thin walled and or 12 point mattered in these situations.
So true. MAC and Snap On used to make specialty impact sockets for tight areas such as head bolts etc. I’ve broken several thin walled chrome 1/2 drive sockets with an impact wrench. Fortunately they were replaced with the lifetime warranty. Otherwise I have standard and metric 3/8 and 1/2 drive impact socket sets. I have a few 3/4 drive sockets for setting preload on ring and pinions (crush sleeves) and a long 3/4 pull bar with extensions.

I have several sets of chrome and impact and they could be interchangeable for most jobs.

I typically favor impact wrenches, so I put an impact socket on the impact wrench at the start of the job. But I still need a ratchet and/or torque wrench to finish tightening it, so these get chrome sockets. I then carry the tools - with sockets installed - when i crawl under the car.

If possible I avoid switching a socket between tools when I'm lying under the car in a yoga position - mostly because I have lost a few this way.
