Purolator synthetic filters

+1.....5000 OCI on a top tier synthetic is a pure waste of $$$ and resources. If you insist on such a short OCI, use a quality conventional like Pennzoil conventional.

For a filter, use a Fram ULTRA for two changes. This will save you $$$ all around.


As I mentioned in my previous post...my Tacoma is still under warranty and as such, it calls for 5K OCI and 0w-20 synthetic. Overkill or not, that's what the factory says to do. So until it hits 5 years or 60K miles that's what I will continue to do.

I'm not really too worried about the whole Purolator thing. I was just thinking of using a filter with a synthetic media and the wired backing. The Puro Syn seem to meet that. I'm open to other suggestions....that's why I mentioned the Mobil 1 filter.

Billiam welcome to BITOG. You will find many people here with many varying opinions. And of course, you know what they say about opinions...

To make a long story short, there are three big contenders in the synthetic filter world.

-Royal Purple ($14-ish range)
-Purolator Synthetic ($12-ish range)
-Fram Ultra ($8-ish range)

You will find people in each camp. I personally use Purolator Synthetic Filters AND Pureones and have never had an issue with either. The Purolator Synthetic has outstanding build quality and will not let you down.

Try not to get sucked in to the frenzy of "Purohating" that goes on around here. If you haven't noticed by know, there are a few members on here that do nothing but potentiate the idea that Purolator is an inferior product. Many respectfully disagree, but most dont get involved because of the assanine nature of the argument. Use what you like, regardless of what the "experts" on here think, then make sure and cut those beautiful filters open and post them for the world to see!

Thanks for the welcome! I've never had an obvious problem with the PureOne or the Classic...though I've never cut one open to look at the media. My desire to use something else really has nothing to do with the "tearing" or whatever people say is wrong. But rather, the syn media with wire backing. Just for the "over-the-counter" convenience, I'll probably go with the Puro Syn of the Fram Ultra. Thanks again everyone.
