Purolator synthetic filters

So...I know there's been a ton of talk lately about Purolator's quality. I've looked over some 20+ pages in this section and it seems like most of the complaints are with the PureOne....a filter I've used on and off for years. Anyway...the Puro Synthetic seems to get, at least some, love around here...even by some of the "PuroHaters".

Been thinking about that filter and maybe an Mobil 1 filter too. I have a 4 cyl Tacoma, 5K OCI with Mobil 1 0w20.

So yes...I'm opening up yet another "opinion on filters" thread.

Yes, the Purolator Synthetic filter is of high quality. The Mobil 1 oil filter has synthetic blend media, but it is an excellent oil filter that also has exceptional build quality (I have used Mobil 1 filters before). I would use either one with confidence.
 
What caught my eye was the Puro Syn was $2-3 cheaper than the M1. They both say they have "wired backing" to strengthen the media.
 
*I* think it boils down to this...

If you want a reliable filter that's 99% efficient (per ISO 4548-12 testing standards) then you have three choices - Purolator Synthetic Oil Filter, Bosch Distance Plus or the Fram Ultra. All three of these have synthetic media and are outstanding filters considering performance, reliability, price, and availability. Both the Fram and the Bosch are available at WalMart. Which one you choose is purely a personal decision.

As a side note, the TRD filters are 98% efficient if you want a genuine Toyota product.

Fram Ultra is $2-3 cheaper than Puro Syn and it's better.

Tacoma 4-cyl is not hard on oil, synthetic oil and filter for 5k OCI is a waste, to get your money worth do 10k OCI.

The Distance Plus doesn't have FULL synthetic media-it's a blend, just like the M1, Fram Tough Guard, etc. Bosch's Full Synthetic filter is the Long Life.

Still under warranty. Toyota calls for 5K/6M OCI.

Yes, I am aware that the Mobil 1 filter is made by FRAM. It is a very good synthetic-blend filter that has a strong can, but in my opinion the FRAM Ultra filter is a better deal because it has wire-backed full synthetic media (2 layers) and 99%+ efficiency at 20 microns ... and has a lower price as well. They also usually cost less than Puro Synthetic filters at regular price. Mobil 1 filters usually cost more ... the ones I used in the past were bought either as part of an oil change special or with coupons that brought the price down between $8 and $9.

You're right. I am currently running a Bosch Long Life filter. It is a very good filter as well (I am not certain, but I believe it is equivalent to the Puro Synthetic filter without the rough, non-slip coating on it). I got a good deal on it when I bought it.

Some say Fram was the low bidder for the Mobile Filter production contract. They have bought filters elsewhere in the past.

I didn't know about it until recently. I became aware of it when I read a post by Motorking in a recent thread which mentioned that FRAM makes the Royal Purple filters. Thanks for providing the information just in case I didn't know about it.

As far as I knew the Royal Purple and Mobil 1 oil filters were Champion Labs filters.
Fram may be the owner now but the design is Champion Labs.

The RP filter seems to be very well built...it weighs a ton...

PS: I have lost faith in Purolator so I won't use their synthetic filter either (even though some say they aren't affected by tearing.) The whole tearing/wavy pleats is a turn off....

They are not, Have you seen one? there no different then a RP or Amsoil or NP. rest assured there a fine well build filter just the same as others.

+1.....5000 OCI on a top tier synthetic is a pure waste of $$$ and resources. If you insist on such a short OCI, use a quality conventional like Pennzoil conventional.

For a filter, use a Fram ULTRA for two changes. This will save you $$$ all around.
