Purolator PureOne vs Synthetic

Hello, BITOG!

I've recently bought my first car and it's about time to do my first oil change!!

It's a 2004 Accord 4 cyl with 158,000 miles, and just under 3,000 of those are my miles. I have already bought a few things I will need.

Since I have no clue how the previous owner kept up with oil changes, I decided on Castrol GTX High mileage and Purolator P1 filter. Is this a good combo, or is the Purolator Synthetic filter a better match?

Also, an even more general question, should I have chosen a full synthetic, or is Castrol HM a good choice (it's a part synthetic.)

Castrol and Valvoline Maxlife oil are both good and semi-syn. So I would use one of those 2 for now and change it every 4-5k.
Either filter will be fine.

I would also clean or replace the PCV valve. Its a small part on top of the motor that's cheap. Hondas are sensitive if they get clogged.

Thanks! I have already looked into replacing the PCV valve, and although I don't have any idle or RPM problems at all, I hope my engine will breathe slightly better. I feel like the valvetrain is the most sensitive part about this motor.

Purolator PureOne filters tear with media failures. The synthetic version is safe.

Ok so what do you recommend I do? I think I'm going to return this filter and get a Bosch.

Notice there were quite a few torn Bosch filters in that spreadsheet too. Bosch made by Purolator. If you want a Bosch, get the "Distance Plus" model since it's synthetic and not prone to failure. If going full synthetic, the Ultra is hard to beat.

The Bosch D3323 apparently is made of cellulose paper, are you sure that's the one you meant?

The Bosch if it's the Distance plus which is what the D3323 is will not tear as the media is stronger and much more of it.

If you want the best filter commonly available it's a Fram Ultra

The D+ is Purolator's version of the M1 (which is made by Fram)

Well what I plan on doing is using this P1 that I have already purchased for about 5,000 miles. From then on, I'll use nothing but Genuine A01 Honda filters. They're the ones made by Filtech.

Welcome Rover.

You will find many MANY differing opinions on oil, filters, pretty much everything down to the optimal level of never dull necessary to shine your chrome without adding to much resistance to make you less aerodynamic...

Having said that, I would say the filter is to some extent less important than the intervals at which you change your oil and filter.

The Pureone is a great filter. I have used them for years. The synthetic is an outstanding filter and I have used that one as well with great result. At the end of the day, any name brand filter is more than sufficient, just change it regularly and you will be fine. If it is a daily driver is stop and go city traffic, I would go with something akin to the Pureone and whatever oil happens to be on sale that day and change it at the 3k-ish mark. A synthetic would probably be safe to 5k ish or more under those same conditions. Highway driving, you could push it farther but at the end of the day...why risk it? Dont blow up a 10k car because you tried to push $12 of oil and a $4 filter for 1,000,000,000 miles...some have done it...it has happened before...
