Purolator Pure One ADBV failure

I opened a Purolator PL14459 oil filter that was on a 2001 Honda CRV running QSUD for about 5000K miles. The anti drain back valve (ADBV) was torn and the piece that came off was in one of the pleats of the filter. The ADBV seemed be very pliable but the piece that was in the filter was harder (somewhat brittle and easy to tear). I have been using the filters for a long time (never opened one up before) but not sure if I want to continue using them after seeing this one.

I know once you've experienced the failure of a product it's hard to continue using it, but remember what has been said here a thousand times: ANY filter manufacturer can have the occasional failure. Who's to say you don't switch brands only to have a failure with one of THOSE?

I've even heard of one or two failures of my favourite brand (Motorcraft), yet I will continue to use them.

Only by cutting open filters do we find these things and we have seen enough to know that it happens to all brands, all price levels. They stamp oil filters out by the millions. Most failures probably go unnoticed because it doesn't cause any long term problems. For all you know, you ran 5000 miles with the filter in that condition I think that likely and surmise that chunk got bitten off during assembly of the filter. Write Puro and attach a pic... like as not you can at least get a new filter or two outta the deal.

I bet Puro will send you more than a few. I would write them and hope that they want you to send it in so they can analyze it.

Yes, it could be a rare "dud" . In any case, an oil filter with a properly functioning anti-drain back valve is very important for engine longivity where the oil filter is mounted horizontally (in this case) or vertically (upside down).

I will contact Purolator as mentioned.

Do contact Purolator as they more than likely will have you send it to them for examination. They sent me 2 more P1's after I had a tear in the media. But after I had another tear in a classic they didn't respond back.

I once bought a Mobil 1 filter,and didnt find out until I got it back that it rattled.The filter element was floating inside the shell.I figured for $12.00 Champ Labs would have done a better QC check on it than that.The 1st and only M1 filter I have ever bought.

I still use PureOne with confidence.

Not sure. It is a family member's vehicle. The driver not notice a start up noise unless it was very loud.I did not notice a start up noise when parking it for the oil and filter change but the engine has just be driven. Maybe the tear in the ADVB was in a position (not at 6 o'clock) so that the filter did not complete drain (I hope).

Still a good filter, but whoever makes that ADBV for them should be catching h__l-possible counterfeit silicone IMHO.

Ahhh! Yellow can of death! Joke. Looks like production/assembly flaw, i dont think oil would break a piece off like that. If you didnt cut it you would never know.

My main concern (other than potential additional wear from "dry starting") at this point is whether a fragment of the defective ADBV could make its way through the bypass valve into the engine and (enven partially) obstructan oil passage.

I sent the filter in for evaluation. They sent it back to with a letter and copy of the their limited warranty following statement highlighted - "Filters which are submitted in a condition that prohibits testing to validate any alleged defect or malfunction". I really don't understand why they were not interested in testing the ADBV material.

Guess they figure any filter that has been cut open could be compromised in terms of what was actually damaged. I had a classic that had a tear in the media, and the only way I could have found that failure was by cutting it open. I sent and email to Purolator with some good photos attached, as I knew they wouldn't do anything for me if I had sent in a cut open oil filter - kind of a "catch 22" situation. Some of these failures (like yours also) can't be seen until the filer is cut open.

I shouldn't browse BITOG forums the day of an OC. I'm getting ready to install a PureOne on our '11 CR-V. As others have said, failures happen with all brands, I'm moving forward as planned.
