changed it today on my fiancee's '91 Pontiac Grand Prix 3.1L...Purolator 68 pleats...Carquest 87 pleats...i kinda liked the gasket surround on the carquest one better too. It was orange and the purolator is black.

What really matters is the number of correctly sized holes in the media. More square inches of media doesn't help if it doesn't have the holes that actually do the filtering. There are many, many choices of filter media for the filter maker to choose from.

Heck, anybody can count pleats.

Be a hero and count all the holes in the filtering media!!!!!!

Wheeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

less pleats=less square inches...duh?

I've been running Carquest air filters and they're really decent. The "blue" premium filters do have more pleats than the "red" economy line too. The media in the "red" line is also more of a brownish color too. Reminds me of a slightly bleached grocery sack material compared to the white media of the "blue" premium filters. Both have worked just fine in my application with no real noticeable difference in performance between the two. I never let my filter get so dirty that I'd ever notice a difference in dirt-holding ability, so for me the cheaper line is more than adequate.
