Good point, and exactly what I was thinking after reading the thread.
Indeed! Even the cheesiest cheap filters do not tear when you bend the media.

Me also.

It was mentioned by one of the posters who was working with Purolator on this that one of the engineers wanted to change the media.

Here is hoping that the new "multi-fiber high density media" in the red filter and "high density synthetic blend media" in the Purolator One are not so brittle.

What I don't understand is why they don't quietly start sticking the new guts in the current filters if it is the solution - instead of waiting for the paint to dry.

You're right. It shouldn't be this brittle.

Just dont say anything about about Purolator. It's racist.

Purolator was an old American company who made products well like the USA mark stood for. Then the German group bought them and everything went downhill. Clearly they changed the media on some filters, and their response to the new defects also changed. Talk from the new company how great they are, Germany, etc, etc, is cheap. So far they aren't batting well. Even the new roll out, a website showing all the new filters, but they aren't available?

Here is the referenced thread:

Purolator is still listening- Engineering report

Quote:
...I asked point-blank if production changes had been made for the Classic and PureOne. The Director of Engineering after some hesitation and repeated "we're looking closely at the situation" finally said he was committed to change the filter media on the PureOne line. The Director of Marketing asked if that was filter specific, no, one media is used across the entire line, so it would be an upgrade for all PureOne's. ...

Emphasis mine.

Someone else said they had seen a change in the center tube on some Classics, but I can't locate it at the moment.

I have no problem using some of these again if they fix the issue and they are priced right, but they need to focus on getting defect free filters on the street and THEN update the webpage. And I still think "Boss" is a stupid name for an oil filter.

In my experience Napa Silver filters do. This difference is they do NOT tear under actual use so IMO it is a non-issue in that line.

Probably five years ago I had problem with the Classics on 4.6 Fords having defective anti drainback valves(timing chain clatter on start up, one was a 26K mi engine)... Quit using them and now that I'm doing extended OCIs never will again... Not had a issue with a Pure One...

Collectors item some day for people who collect everything with old discontinued logos. New faces coming soon. Reset, shake dirt off hands, no more past problems.

I replaced this filter with a Napa silver. It will be interesting to see how it will perform on a 5k interval compared to the Purolator I just pulled off. Again, this filter did not tear under usage. It only tore when I pushed on the media. I would agree that if not torn during usage it is not a failure.

Probably due to re-tooling and new process costs. They figure just do it once with the new line instead of twice.

They might very well be doing so. We'll just have to see the late-2015-made filters cut open to find out for sure. Date codes F10G, F11G, F12G, F01H.

Changes are often made before they are announced.
