Purolator and cardboard endcaps

Does anyone know if the Purolator L14670 oil filter has metal endcaps or cardboard endcaps? The cross references for the Purolator would be the FRAM PH-16 and the SuperTech ST16. They are short oil filters but really wide. Anyway just wondering if they had cardboard endcaps or not. Oh and for some interesting reason the inlet holes on this Purolator are not the typical 7 oval holes. I think there are 8 but the interesting part is they are perfectly round and spaced really close together and not oval.

There have been several oil filter physical inspection studies posted on the internet, all of which have always found Purolator to use metal end caps.

So far only Fram and the brands Fram manufactures seem to commonly use cardboard internal end caps.

I've cut open 2 different Purolators and they both had metal end caps. The internals looked pretty good.

A few years back I cut open a Purolator Premimum Plus L10111 I think, anyway it's the one that crosses with a PF47 and it had cardboard endcaps........

I cut one open last week. I have no pictures, but it looked like a nice filter.

Also cut open a wix 51085, st16, and fram ph16. For the money I would pick the purolator. My unscientific rankings would have been.

Both the L10111 and the PL10111 I cut apart had metal endcaps and great construction. Also had the most area.

The 5 Purolator Pure One 14670's I cut open had metal end caps, but the filter pleats were not installed in a uniform pattern. I now use a K&N 3001 for my Dodge 3.3 V6.

It's kind of funny how I have to keep reposting these photos. I need a bigger web space.

Purolator is on the right in both shots. The other filter is a Nissan OEM. Both look well made to me.

Is that supposed to be the bypass valve on the end of the filter. The website lists one, but I have know Idea how that thing works. At least with the "clicker" ST valve there are holes in the metal. I was thinking about replaceing my mopar with the L14670, but after looking over the filter again I could not figure it out. The mopar filter has the spring on the open end, also made by purolator. (first oil change coming up 3.8)

That bypass looks like the bypass used in some of the toyota OEM filters.

I thought all Purolators had string around the media. Is this another case of brands being made by different manufacturers, i.e. some Delcos are Champion Labs?

No, purolator is both a manufactorer and distributor. The string thing is most likely from an older design or specific filter application.
