Purflux LS-218 Cutopen with rust

Photos of the filter of my Renault Clio, only 3000 km on it since I don't use it very often.

As always very good construction, the only detail is that the canister had some surface rust on the inside. I don't know if that is because of improper storage before I bought it, or because of a manufacturing oversight.

It was made on November of 2020, so, maybe is another byproduct of the manufacturing crisis. Either way I am not worried about it, is just something that I had never seen before.

The used oil was Mobil 1 0W-40, and since I don't plan to use that car very much, I went for a cheaper oil, Kirkland Dexos 1 5w30 and a fresh Purflux filter.

Wow, those are some wavy pleats. j/k Not keen on the rust on the interior of the can. Makes me question how and/or where the the filter was stored prior to use. Hard to imagine the rust occurred in use, but since lightly used, depending on filter orientation, very outside chance of that. In any case not an ideal finding. Tiny filter, for a small cid engine.

As for the wavy pleating, obviously (or should be) a difference between a designed zig zag pattern used in topic filter and a filter with straight design pleating. That said, generally speaking some pleat wave on the latter as long as no tear results, not a functional issue.

Rust could be from storage prior to installation. Could be caused from excessive moisture buildup from short trips and storage

Wavy pleats means nothing. Looks cool. That's all. Need to know the filter media type, its gram holding capacity per media surface area, its single/multi pass efficiency, and/or nominal/absolute micron ratings.

Not only do the zig zag pleats slightly increase surface area, they also make the filter media more rigid. So I've got to like the design, and actually prefer it over other techniques to stiffen the filtration media, such as the plastic/glue exoskeleton that Mann Hummel uses.

Purflux was the original OE supplier for the 2.2/2.4 Ecotec before GM switched to Hengst (straight pleats). Aftermarket filters with straight pleats twist in service, though it occurs much less with the OE Hengst. Thankfully, Purflux still makes the L264A with the chevron pleats for that Ecotec.
