Thanks for the tip, M-AC..the Wix has a relief-valve pop pressure of 8-11 PSI. The spec'd PureOne for my car is 12-15. Prob I should leave THAT idea go, too. Don't want it by-passing too easily, do I?

The NAPA doesn't offer the PSI in their fact sheet. I guess when you don't know, do nothing, eh?

Tx anyway!

Don't sweat the bypass setting. Keep in mind that you're basing your opinion on Purolator's spec's ..yet you can't assume that is anywhere near what was OEM (see what I mean?

The bypass setting is to protect the media. Wix runs typical for all their filters except for specific applications like VW/AUDI where the factory spec is way outta whack. It's the same with Purolator. They have a media that is designed to take the higer PSID ..probably to maintain their high filtration rate over a longer duration.

The filters probably have the same holding capacity for like sized units.

NAPA is WIX - just subtract the leading "5" from the filter part number. A NAPA Gold is no other filter then a WIX. Every WIX (labelled as a WIX) is a the same as a NAPA GOLD.

Anyway a PL20073 is the Purolator version of the longer WIX/NAPA filter that was suggested. Also keep in mind that both the Premium Plus and PureOne offer the same bypass settings ..yet have different levels of filtration. Ponder that for a bit

Are you using this filter on a Subaru? It's the filter I use for the H6 engine and I'd be interested in something a bit larger myself.

Hey yall..
It's being used on (get this) a 92 Hyundai Elantra, 240,000 miles, 1.6 DOHC. The PL14459 is the suggested filter, and the one I have on it as of my latest change last week (I am a reformed Frammer). I'm also a reformed 3000 mile changer of the 10W-40 or 0W-40 Mobil 1 I've been using for 8 years now. But the 14459 is tiny, it makes me nervous leaving the thing on there all that time/miles.

As for compatibility, I went on a pureoil site, and started putting in different years and makes of Mitsubishi motors engines (mine is, at heart, a Mitsu), and even for Diamontes, Monteros, and a lot of the Toyota Tundras, even with V-8 engines use the PL14459. As usual, my worrying is for nothing, but this 7500 mile OCI is a new concept. I can't believe auto makers go for this, in warranty, anyway.

More assumptions challenged. At 3000 miles, I'll send a sample in for analysis and see what's what with all this.

Thanks for the help!

I think most of the 7500 mile OCIs are based on NON-severe use. But the situations most of us see qualify as SEVERE useage.
As a reformed 3000 mile OCI'er myself, I've settled on 5000 mile intervals. And I use synthetic. I'd rather err on the side of being overly cautious. Makes me feel better.

Yeah, me too. But I lied. The car and peripherals of my car have 240K, the engine, heads and 5 speed tranny only have 150K.

I try to avoid bumper-bumper traffic, but on the runs to Boston and Florida, it's 80 or so all the way up. Is that severe service?

Wix 51626, NAPA Silver 21626, NAPA Gold 1626, or Purolator 14619 (in PremiumPLUS or PureONE). The Purolators have a base-plate end coil spring bypass valve These are he-man filters - both in overall diameter as well as length (about the physical size of the PH16s once used on Chrysler V8s and "Slant-6" motors). I use them on my '03 Sonata.

Short trips, lots of idling, very cold weather, extremely dusty conditions, towing a trailer are all considered severe. If your car seldom sees those conditions you can probably go with much longer OCIs.
It really comes down to what you want to accomplish. Some people like to squeeze out the longest OCIs possible while others like to reduce engine wear to the lowest levels possible. Most people are probably somewhere in between.

Anyone know of a substitute offering more capacity than the PureOne PL14459 in the Pureone lineup? I have plenty of room for a bigger filter. I've searched the PureOil site, looking for a bigger case but similar specs, but haven't found it yet.

Here are the vitals for the PL 14459:
Height: 2.95" O.D 3.15"
Relief Valve P.S.I.: 12-15
Type of Filter: Spin-on
Threads: M20x1.5

Thanks!

Same thread, relief psi, etc? Also, is it really beneficial? I'm going on out to 7500 with my last oil change except that at 3000 miles, I'm going to change the filter and top off with a quart of the 0W-40 that I started with. From then on, I'll change at 7500 starting the change with with the larger filter. Ordered the oil test kit, too. Going to test at 3000, and again when I change at 7500. The test at 3000 should tell me whether I should go on to 7500, yes? Viable plan?

Everything I've read here says I'm "stoopid" for changing out oil this expensive at 3000 miles in a weeny moto like a 1.6 DOHC. Idiot factor, 9.9. You guys must have a laugh when knuckleheads like me turn up. I can't help it. My mechanical skills were honed in my teens aboard USS Nimitz, on A-6E Intruders and F-14 Ejection seats, Air Conditioning, and LOX. Everything in NAVAIR is critical, nothing was too good for the birds, and those rules are written in blood.

The paranoia they instill at A-School regarding corrosion control and quality of work and fluids is a tough monkey to shake off the back, even if the rules and vehicles are different.

Go figure. My name is Jim. I am an addict.

Purolator used to make a 24458 model filter. It is much larger than the 14459. You can still find some at the Auto Parts stores.
