PureOne Filter changes (another gold filter)?

I actually see those metal shavings with every brand of oil filter, be it Purolator, Supertech, Napa/Wix, etc. I just wipe them off until there's no more residue on my finger and call it good.

My PL14460 filters arrived last night from Amazon. All of mine are the older blue can versions. I took a look and a couple of them did have a speck or two of something stuck in the threads. Most likely metal flakes from the machining process?

Registered here because last time i went to buy a pureone all the filters were blue, and i went today to get the stuff for an oil change on the neon and they were gold and i was a tad bit concerned if the inner structure of the filter was different for either better or worse. So overall the same with the exception of the coating, which you guys are saying is flaking? Bad enough where i should take the filter back or what?

I also oredred them from Amazon a while back and got the Gold Neon Puke colored ones. No problems with threads of flaking paint that I can see, however I did see one or two in the stores with issues. Those issues appeared with some other brands too.

I also use Mobil 1 filters, and after reading the long thread of the Mobil 1 filter vs. the Amsoil filter I will eventually switch from Pure One to the Mobil 1 filters when my supply runs out.

For now I am not worried about it, and hopefully at some point someone will test the Pure Ones the way the Mobil 1 and Amsoil filters were tested.

i sent them a comment about the sparkles on the filter hopefully the oil engineers will get back to me on it

I just bought the PP/PP oil change special from Pep Boys and guess what. I got the blue can. Would that be the old can? may be they decided to go back to the old look?

Some stores are slower in getting them. The PureOne on my Corolla now is a gold one, but the PureOne on my Chrysler is a blue one. I bought the blue one about a month after the gold one...gold came from AutoZone, blue from Pep Boys. I guess Pep Boys has a bunch of old blue stock to run through first.

Look for the lot number on the can (somewhere - probably the dome end). It will most likely tell you the plant, date, and time that it rolled off the line.

That's interesting. I've never seen metal shavings or loose paint chips on the Denso YZZF1 filter, but I really never looked closely either. So just now, I closely inspected an oversized Mobil 1 filter that I have handy (the M1-209), and didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

I was happy to see that the Mobil 1's metal threads seem to be smoother than the last time I felt them a couple years ago--one of the reasons I stuck with the Denso two years ago. But today the Mobil 1's threads don't seem as rough as they were 2 years ago--don't know if it's just my imagination.

I also have an STP handy (the S4967). No metal shavings, paint, or cardboard pieces to speak of. Did have a Night Gallery experience though. When I removed the rubber-like gasket, I saw between 5 and 10 super-small bugs crawling around inside the metal groove where the gasket fits! The bugs must have been a millimeter or less in length and slightly brown in color. One bug was especially small like it was a youngster. Maybe these bugs have an unusual life cycle, living and giving birth inside the filter's groove, between the metal and the rubber gasket? Very weird to see. I wonder what they eat? The rubber?

I bought both the buggy STP filter and the nice Mobil 1 filter from AutoZone less than a month ago. The STP bugs stayed inside the groove. They didn't venture out even after I lifted the gasket, although they were scurrying around like they knew they'd been spotted.

One thing I don't like about this STP filter is the box says "Change your oil filter every 3 months or 3,000 miles."

I wonder if the bugs might lead to an elevated protein count in a used oil analysis :-)

I think when I wrote that, I worded it poorly. It's not necessarily shavings per se but rather a very fine metallic powder. Try wiping your finger on the threads of a filter you have once and see if you notice any residue on your finger.

Yep,I use the Pure One filters on my cars. The grippy stuff really helps when your hands are slick & dirty.

Yep, makes hand tightening a breeze.

I took out my PureOne today when I changed my oil and put in a black Wix.

The yellow grippy PureOne is way better to tighten, loosen AND hold when flipping it upside down to drain the oil out!

I really wish they had retained the blue color. That 'g'hold collair, just ..well, it just doesn't make it for me. That blue was beautiful (sob).
