OK I have a crazy idea so I wanna run it by you guys who know more about chemicals.

What is in those power steering conditioners & sealing/ stop leak cans? Do they really work?

I need to recondition some rubber bushings in my front suspension. The rubber has hardened. I want to soak them in these conditioners to get them more pliable and reswell them a bit? As opposed to critical engine seals, the rubber bushings are tough.

What do you think?

I don't know how or why they work, but they do. My mom's 94 Probe GT's power steering used to leak so bad she would run the system dry about every 3000 miles. Now it only loses a few drops here and there and doesn't run dry on her anymore if we forget to check it for her for a while.

I would doubt they are made of the same compounds, and besides wouldn't it just be easier to put a new part in if you are taking it apart anyhow? Might save your life.

I have to say that you are better off just buying new buschings. Busschings are cheap in most cases. I doubt that you will have much luck with reconditioning the ruber. Any solvent strong enough to realy penatrate and swell the ruber is also going to weaking it. Chasis busching have to carry a load not just seal.

Well looks like the good replies I've got might help me here.

Well I wish the bushings were cheap and were available seaprately. On my 89 Legend they are ot available separately. You need to purchase the complete A arm. A pair for the front would be $460. The ball joint is fine but the bushings have excess lateral play. I understand the Accord has bushings separately. Took apart the A arm tonite and the bushings look like they could have been available separately. Looks like a gouge to me. I'm just gonna take up some play with some stainless washers and see if that'll do the trick. I'll also use some PSF sealer conditoner as well. Figure can't hurt too much.

My rack is leaking and I've seen the Bardahl Honda PSF with sealer conditioner built in. I'm wondering if that is gonna work, or just go and buy a used rack and use the Bardahl sealer conditioner as an preventitive measure.

Thanks for the suggestions though.

Have you checked aftermarket sources for those bushings, especially some of the Acura specialty sources?

I'd use Auto-Rx in your steering system to stop the leaks.

I thought of AutoRX but how can it seal leaks by cleaning? Plus the other consideration is that by the time I land one bottle in Canada it is going to cost the same as a used rack that comes with a warranty -$70. I figure after 250,000 km, and 14 years, there's gotta be some wear that is causing the leak and it's not just a question of contamination. I'm guessing though. If autorx was available retail in Canada I'd try it but getting it here is a killer.

Shipping to Toronto via USPS Priority is
USD $ 8.00 customs form shows it to be non hazardous cleaning compound ( so far no problem) how it works follows.Frank

Go to www.auto-rx.com and there you can read how Auto-Rx cleans seals (both buna & silicone)in
industry we refurbish seal material in 55 gallon
gear boxes without down time or seal replacement
and we do the same thing in car engines. Auto-Rx
does not "Swell" seals. We make them pliable as
they were when first installed and can clean behind them. Auto-Rx uses the petrol chemistry of new "Dino Oil" to harden seals back up for proper fit against metal. Auto-Rx can not harm seals. However the idea is to stop seal leak and application instructions make procedure clear. You can leave Auto-Rx in indefintely without fear of any type damage. Hope this answer your question.
