My Shadow is shaft driven and I changed the gear oil about 1500 miles ago. I put the bike on the jack so it was standing up perfectly straight and filled the rear end. Recently, I heard the actual proper way is to leave it leaning the kickstand so it doesn't get overfilled. Does anyone know if there is some universal rule for filling final drives on shaft bikes and I did it wrong? I didn't find anything in my manual.

Don't spin the wheel while filling, it will allow you to easily overfill the rear drive. The lube is so thick that it clings to the gears and takes awhile to come back to level, meantime you have added too much lube.
My Valkyrie manual states that the bike should be straight up and down resting on it's wheels and fluid should be just at the level of the bottom of the filler hole. I use a bike jack just enough to balance the bike without altering the geometry of the rear wheel by elevating the machine. Being that your bike is also a Honda, I'd be willing to bet that the above method would also apply to your bike.
By the way, take a dry shop rag or paper towels and place them on and around the tire below the filler hole to prevent getting lube onto your rear wheel.

On my Silverwing the procedure is to use the center stand, open the drain and fill plugs, allow everything to drain, and then rotate the rear wheel to facilitate total draining. To refill, I add gear oil to the point of the fill hole's overflowing.
Depends on the particular bike. I start on the center stand and drain as much as possible that way.
If, as in most Hondas, the drain hole is NOT on the bottom, I lean the bike over in that direction and a few more ounces come out.
Fill on center stand, or near straight up/down as possible.

I use the recommended quantity,and go from there.But I must admit,Honda's are the hardest final drives to fill.
