Holden racing teams in 1974 were assembling a rig with a brake caliper and a machined down section of flywheel.

Heat cast iron disk (flywheel) to dull heat. Assemble pads on caliper, and clamp hard. Watch "ash" line progress from the friction face to 1/4" in from the friction face, and bingo pad ready to go.
