Problems with and an explanation of oil bath timing belts

So, watching the vid, I find I really appreciate his euro sarcasm of basically, "Duh, nothing has changed and this can't be a good idea"

I can't help but feel like it parallels something that has been amplified ever since, say.....oh.... March '20 where we've been beat over the heads with LISTEN TO THE EXPERTS, PEASANT!!

Up next: Ford engineers declare men can get pregnant. Everyone nods and agrees because those engineers have a lot of letters behind their names. Yep.

Why not just use a chain if it's getting lubed with oil?
In theory belts are quieter, and they don't wear out of time, well until they break! Chains will wear "stretch" enough to make a small difference in timing, but its not a ton.
I guess it must save 3 nickels... so certain brands will do that kind of stuff.
The oil bath belt seem to be the worst combination for the owner?

My old Focus is pretty quiet and it seemed the chain wasn't terribly stretched when I replaced the valve cover, and it didn't have the greatest oil or OCI before I got it.
The Outback timing chains are a bit noisier, but not enough to notice while in use, so I guess they are quiet enough!

True, but... who cares? A camshaft would, but an oil pump?

Mine too.

Sure seems like it!

Hard to believe but IMO the timing belt SOHC is maybe best? yeah yeah I know I know, everyone hates to change 'em. But if done right, it's not that big of a deal every 100k. But toss in DOHC on a V motor, make it traverse, and then add in "interference" and... when was EV coming around to fix all the world's problems again?

Wait a minute. I’m not supposed to trust engineers now? This is all so confusing because in the oil section you can almost hear the “trust the engineers” chant, yet here we’re told they can screw things up.

You guys aren’t helping my anxiety now. Can someone please remind me to breathe?

Air is known to contain carcinogens like automobile exhaust and other pollutants. You should try to refrain from breathing too much.

I watched this a few weeks ago. I never thought to post it here.

What I found odd was that he mentioned the 1.5DCi engine that I have in my Duster. That most certainly doesn't have any wet belts. He must be mistaken.

I had a Mondeo with the 1.8TDCi and was the one who brought it to the attention of a lot of owners who assumed they still had a chain. I ended up retrofitting the older chain onto mine and was grateful I was able to. It still amazes me that someone hasn't developed chain retrofit kits for the ecoboosts and puretech engines.

I don't get that feeling from it at all.

Ford and other manufacturers are fully capable of building an engine that lasts a long time. That wouldn't be good for profits though. The 1.0L Ecoboost with the oil bath timing belt and oil pump drive belt is the prime example of the modern automotive corporation mindset: CAFE numbers and profits above everything. Let's remember the engineers are fully capable of designing something durable, but then that would go against that profit mindset...

I found out after the fact of purchase that my wifes Bronco Sport with the 1.5L Dragon engine was a wet belt for the oil pump. Did not know this was a thing and probably would not have purchased it if known beforehand.

That being said, I am fine to live with it as I have found plenty of examples exceeding 200K+ miles of use with them and do not feel premature breakage of them is any more risk than any other catastrophic part failure with the engine. I will have normally trade off for something else long before I see that kind of mileage with it.
