problems installing motor mount in 94 Camry 4

So I finally got the rusty nut off the stud (using heat) and got the motor mount out and a new one in place. I started the main vertical bolt from the engine bracket into the rubber motor mount by hand then tightened with normal ratchet. It got very tight about half way in so I removed it to find that maybe 1/4" up from the bottom of the bolt, the threads are mangled for 1/3", bolt no longer usable. It was not that way when I started. Unsure what happened. The engine bracket is maybe 1/2" thick so you cannot get the bolt started anyway but straight. Now I will get a new bolt, but do not want it to happen again.

I hope the threads in the engine mount are not also screwed up.

Ideas?

Now I am really stumped. I removed the engine mounting bracket so I could have a look at the threads on the engine mount and a chunk of the top of the machined metal where the threaded hole is was broken off. Unsure what came first. Did this breaking off of a chunk of metal damage the threads on the bolt, or did the threads of the bolt get damaged as I threaded it in and then I tried to tighten the bolt into the motor mount with damaged threads, it broke a piece of the machined metal off.

Hard to believe how the threads would get damaged by just threading the bolt in.

And also hard to believe that a class 8 bolt and washer cost $5.00 at NAPA.
