My FIL retired from GM at 56 and kind of lost it. He just couldnt handle it , almost ended in divorce. As hes gotten older he has mellowed out and now at 85 he has drawn a pension for 29 years and only worked there for 24 years . Must be nice.

My dad kept going back to work after retiring. He would just get too bored.
Seriously. He went back to Police patrol duty well into his '50s. Still managed to have more felony arrests than men half his age. Got a more cush job teaching racquetball at a small university for a few years after that.
I think it might have stuck now that they have a proper RV. Guess the pension is good enough to keep that Ford V10 fueled and maintained

My FIL's retirement is similar (from Harvester) - he was 51, he is now 82. Over the years, he has built model airplanes, built guitars (he had a band), built additions onto the house, and built 2 'mini' cars from the ground up. He has stayed very busy!
It has kept his body healthy, and his mind sharp as a tack, too.

I'm never going to retire I like working to much, like my grandfather I'll work until I die. Why would I stop doing something I enjoy?
Eventually I can see myself taking 6 months off a year to travel and enjoy life.
Unless you have money and can really enjoy not working why retire? If you can travel, than yeah its a blast. My grandmother travels all the time this year she went to Paris, Australia, the UK, Canada, and the Bahamas. Next year I have no idea anything in Asia or the Pacific is to long of a flight for her, probably 2-3 months in Europe and the islands, followed by another 3-4 at her place in FL.
