I have a Ferris IS500 with 26 HP B&S that is about six years old now. When I turn the key, I get one click. Usually, after about four tries, it starts. I have checked the battery (getting 12V) and removed, cleaned and tightened all contact points I could find, including ground wire. Based on my research, I am thinking solenoid or starter. Any advice is appreciated. I am not overly mechanical. Thank you!

Can you try the key while holding one hand on the starter motor? That might narrow it down. If it's the starter, you should feel a slight thump or twinge. Auto solenoids aren't very expensive, don't know about the lawn tractor ones. I'd replace that first.

My 2¢

Only things I've had to replace on my Scag are fuel gauge (ethanol) and starter solenoid. Sounds like solenoid to me if all connections are tight.

Almost certainly the solenoid contacts in the starter getting worn and intermittent. The Kohler on my JD developed that symptom, and several cars I've owned with Nippondenso starters also developed the problem over time.

If your engine is overhead valve the compression release may be the problem. Same symptoms on a 16.5 Briggs. After valves were adjusted only needed to turn key once to start.
