Prius uses vacuum flask to heat up cold engine

The Prius is chock-a-block full of excellent engineering and practical applications of existing technology. While that does not, by itself, make it an excellent car, it's built well and works well.

There is no question that the car is optimized for peak MPG's while still retaining acceptable qualities. I like 'em.

Many upsides to it but lets face it - one major downside is its another electric pump to go bad. They get noisy and stop working and arent exactly cheap to replace! (mine is noisy right now and has been since I bought it - Im waiting for it to croak out totally before I replace it)

I wonder if that pump is covered by the emissions system warranty?

Not bombs just truth.....Hybrid owners think they are saving the planet....they are a joke IMO. When you see the recycling cost of the batteries or the issues created by rare earth materials being used up in them you will get my drift. Otherwise, I am no Tea Party person. Just not stupid enough to buy the Hybrid hype from all of the greenies.

Look, I have no problem with giving my money to Japaneese people.

I just don't enjoy giving my money to Arab terrorists or dictators.

This has nothing to do with saving the planet. If I was serious about saving the planet, I would kill myself and my family.

I have lost count of how many Thermos our family had broken over lifetime! I hope Toyota did not buy them from the glass maker Thermos.

I dont know what hybrid drivers you know, but I know a few and not a single one is driving a hybrid to, in your words "think they are saving the planet". I drive mine because it cut my gas expenses down to 1/3 of what it was when I drove a 15mpg SUV. And to further dilute your weak stereotypical argument, if that was Prius' owners first concern (saving the planet) then they would use mass transit, use a bicycle, use a full electric car, or walk. Your statement is invalid sir.

Also, the batteries are easily recyclable. As a matter of fact, you get around $200 BACK when you turn one in. Cool! Not that you'll probably ever have to worry about it, the batteries are warranted for 10 years/150,000 miles in CARB states and 8 years/100,000 miles in non-CARB states. Im personally more concerned with the tires being recycled when they are at the end of their life.

You ever own a car with chrome plated bumpers or trim? Uh oh! A lot of nickel is used with chrome and chrome plating.

Listen, you have no idea what you are talking about. You are jealous and bitter about a technology that has been around for a long time. Its proven. Show me the ailing environment from hybrid batteries (you wont find anything) and show me a battery recycler whose life has been turned upside down and is miserable now that they might have a very rare hybrid battery to recycle - you wont find that either. Hybrid/electric vehicles have created much needed new jobs in the battery field and for manufacturers while lessening our dependence on imported FOREIGN oil from Countries that want nothing more than all America to die a fiery death. Why would you want to support that any more than you absolutely have to?

Better hurry, you're going to miss the daily 5 o'clock rhetoric over at Faux News!

That would be a bit severe don't you think? Have you considered getting help with your feelings? In all seriousness if you really have thoughts like that you should talk to someone about it.

WOW, you guys really get riled up about hybrids and then do nothing but attack people. I am not bitter or jealous about someone with a Prius? Seriously? I could by 10 of them if I wanted to but choose not to because I am secure enough with myself. I have a Toyota Avalon....which is a great vehicle.

My whole point in all of this banter is that you plug your hybrid into a nuclear or coal fired power plant. So is it really doing anyone any good? Plus your hybrid contains 2 very poisonous (to the environment) batteries that are very costly to recycle and the environmental impact to secure the materials creates huge increases in strip mining and subsequently deforestation of the planet. So my Avalon while larger and getting less mpgs. may in fact have less environmental impact than your Prius. Plus I don't have to plug it into anything. AND it is made in Kentucky by US workers.

My whole point is about looking at the total big picture of the impact each vehicle makes versus what is "stylish" with the greenies.

One last question: Do you have an Obama-Biden bumper sticker on the back?

Got bad news for you doogy ol buddy..
Prius production is coming to the states in 2015. But you make a good point, the Camry is a great car. If it got 50mpg in the city like my Prius, I'd for sure consider one.

Secondly, Im not riled up at all. Just stating the facts sir. You have an agenda and I called you out on it. Sorry about that, its a bad habit I have, I know.

Also I prefer not to have any stickers on my cars. I did tint the windows and am looking for a nice set of rims for the summer though.

Doog, I know people like you and my best advice is to pick your battles carefully. Every point you've stated has been dispelled so many times its not even worth beating the dead horse any longer.

Figure one of those vacuum insulated coffee urns will keep coffee hot for nearly 12hrs. I'd imagine 'yota's system is at least that fancy.

This hot coolant reservoir sounds great.
But in summer conditions or certain climates, rather useless.
In the cold, a great thing.
Sure, it will not stay hot for several days in a Chicago January, but When it DOES work, it is a great benefit.

I don't beleive that tech comes to Oz, can't find it mentioned in the book, nor see anything that looks remotely like it could be it.

Sorry but you are the one that made that awful comment about your family. In light of the recent gun violence maybe you should be referred to local law enforcement. Making those kinds of statements has no place on this or any forum. You should be banned. BTW, I am NOT your bro.

I don't have a Camry I have an Avalon. But the Camry is a great car as well. I don't know anyone who drives a Prius...I did get one as a loaner once. It was like driving a toy video game. The thought of driving one for longer than a week simply had too much of a heavy dork factor. Face it. The Prius is for dorks. A few hollywood types drove them to be cool and then went back to their Bentlys. I really don't think the impact from those vehicles is that substantial. Simply not worth the trade off. But that is all just MHO.

That's a pretty sound set of data to base your rants on...
