EK, like I said in PM, I didn't endorse anything...merely posted the link as humour. If you can point out to me where I tried to use the vid to make a point or referenced it's content in any way other than the .50 bmg, I'll gladly concede.
FTR, and you know this, I dont bash the Prius or it's technology.

And yes, I clearly understand you oft repeated argument...basically boils down to any problem Toyota ever has with any car or issue, you are glad to point out that EVERY car maker has issues. It's nothing new or hard to understand, we all get it. Children have been using the same argument for centuries, nothing to figure out really.

First of all, that's not my argument, though I have pointed out other car makers' problems where appropriate. Please don't put words into my mouth (or in this case, perhaps, take them out...).

But even if that were all I had to say, if everyone gets it, then why does a thread about a $1300 MFD for a Prius take on a life of its own, while there is little or no interest in similarly expensive failures in other cars (that aren't favorite attack targets...)? "We all get it"? What about the member asserting that a Prius should only be purchased with an extended wty, and traded as soon as it expires? Yet in truth, the same "logic" is equally applicable to virtually any modern car, and perhaps more so to the truly expensive ones with lots of electronic toys.

There are indeed some childish arguments made here about certain cars and types thereof, but I'm not the one making them. . .

And neither was I...Yet I got caught up in your defensive knee jerk reaction to them.

I clearly linked the video for it's humorous value, I clearly made no point based on the video and never represented any type of argument either way for or against the Prius.

Yet, you had no problem calling me out and labeling me as resposible for the points within the video and implied I was making a point of some sort surrounding it. Talk about putting words in someones mouth. Go re read your original post that quoted me if you want a good example of that.

We're going a bit afield here, but let's clarify. There's a big difference between being responsible for what you post, and mischaracterizing another members postings... I didn't put the "words" of that video in your mouth -- you put them there yourself. If I missed your humorous intent, my apologies. For my part, I have said far more in these threads than just "other cars have problems too," and claiming this is just plain incorrect. Moreover, taking the further step of labeling what you claim is my argument (but isn't) as childish is a fairly low blow. There's no need for that here. There's plenty of room under the tent for all of us and our views. If we disagree, so be it. Let's keep it civil, respectful, and professional, please.

Video is chock full of false facts (nobody EVER claimed, except perhaps some extremist owner, that the Gen-I Prius could do 66 mpg...). Oh yeah, and that version of the Prius has been out of production for OVER EIGHT YEARS!!! Perhaps we might try using some CURRENT INFORMATION. Is that too much to ask?

Too bad I dont have the ability to go back and edit my prior posts like you apparently do. What happened to this post EK, did you change it or one of the mods?

Like I said before, I never have bashed your beloved Prius in anyway, and that linked video was not put up to make a point or to support any argument against the Prius. Like you say, you missed the humour intended, so be it...I refenced the .50 BMG and thats it, Jeremy's babbling is mere window dressing to the main event imo.

No offense intended EK, but when you place me in the group of bashers, then expect feedback. Again, show me where I was bashing the Prius???

Let's be perfectly clear. Yes, Mod/Admins can go back and change any post, by any member, at any time we want to. That said, I have NEVER in my 3+ years as a member of the BITOG team, used that power to go back and alter the substance of one of my posts, or any other post by anyone. Period, just that simple.

Where on earth did I EVER say you did?????? Oh, and if you'd like to hear a hint of criticism -- please notice that, as I've said about a zillion times here, I don't drive the Prius any more. I replaced it with the TCH. My son is buying the Prius from me.

Now you're repeating yourself. I have already apologized to you for missing the subtlety of your posting. One more time, I AM SORRY, I MISSED YOUR POINT. For your part, please do try to be a little clearer regarding your intent. Being all over the board at all hours, sometimes I'm not totally zeroed in on the context of each thread.

I NEVER called you a basher. I merely pointed out that irrespective of what you post or link to, you are responsible for the content. So if it's meant as humor, please make that clear, and then you're fine. If you link to a porno video, well, you'll find another flavor of responsibility, if you catch my drift. So let's be clear -- I HAVE NOT accused you of being a "basher" of any product, period. Please, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the debate. And remember the fundamental nature of DEBATE. It implies both disagreement, and mutual respect. I've respected the content of your posts, and I expect the same from you in return. Fair?

Reviving this thread from the dead.

WE finally decided fix the screen. Toyota denied the goodwill request so I have been actively searching eBay for a unit from a junkyard Prius.

The entire process was a bit more difficult than I had expected because there were many different units depending on the particular vehicle's option combination. A call to two dealers (always call more than one) with the VIN narrowed down the correct part number.

I found a unit from LKQ on eBay that was removed from a 2009 Prius. Hopefully by 2009, all of the quality issues have been resolved and this unit will last a long time.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140536903030&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

$465 shipped, which is a lot cheaper than the $1500 than the dealer wants for a reman unit. Hopefully this will solve the problem. I will report back once I have the unit installed this week.

A used unit is always a [censored] shoot. Good luck. That's one high tech auto that probably has a few surprises in store for you yet.

I bet!!

Prius in general is very reliable, but things like that will probably get this car to the scrap yard once it's old enough. I consider this a glimpse of the future (provided electric car takes off) and the disposable transportation that awaits us.

It's from a 2009, so hopefully that lowers my odds of a defective unit. LKQ also has a 90 day warranty. It comes tomorrow and I'll have it installed this weekend.

I've never done an interior or audio/video work so this will be an interesting project...

I swapped out the unit this morning and the problem is fixed. The replacement unit from LKQ worked perfectly. The Prius dash is extremely well-designed so the process was extremely easy and straightforward, even for a first-timer who has never worked on the interior.

It only took me 25 minutes, which is less than flat rate.

But how long if you actually put it all back together? I could probably get it look like the photo in short order as well

Actually start to finish was 25 minutes. This repair was one of those few situations where it was far more difficult to disassemble than reassemble.

I do agree, great job.

However, I find dis-assembly to typically be the harder of the two. One may not be familiar with the process, so they are learning as they go along. Fasteners may be stuck and need additional help. You have to figure out which tools or tricks needed. Basically you are doing all the learning on the dis-assembly.

Once it's time to put it back together, you've done the learning, you don't have to fight with stuck fasteners, so it proceeds a bit quicker.

That is, unless you get done and find one fastener you forgot, then you get to do it all over again!
