My old Epson printer won't work with Windows 7 so I am thinking about purchasing a replacement. Don't need anything fancy.Any opinions on printers that aren't ink hogs?

Totally agree-Brother.

Laser.

I my experience, there is a very, very narrow window under which ink jet printers are more economical than lasers in the long run. If you don't use an ink jet often enough, ink dries up in the jets and the printer becomes useless. If you use it too often, you'll spend too much on ink and your per-page cost would be lower with laser.

Manufacturers also tend to stop supporting ink jet printers after a few years, while they support lasers much longer.

This. Plus the hydraulics of inkjet printers aren't built to last. Even before the printer dies completely, print quality deteriorates fast as things get clogged.
Oh and HP gives inkjet printers almost away because they can sell the ink for more than blood.

Agreed!

Brother for me. I recently purchased a replacement printer, got a WiFi enabled Brother, nice to be able to put the printer anywhere, and print from anywhere!

In most large cities there are a couple Good-Will stores, and only one of those stores is the main store for used computers and printers. You can ask any Good-Will store in a large city which Good-Will store in the area is the main store for used computers and printers and they will tell you. Go to that store and get a used laser printer. They are real cheep compared to any printer new. If you are not in any hurry wait for a major sales day like black Friday and you can get things at an even lower cost.

Laser printer toner cartridges last a looooong time. If you do have to replace the toner cartridge get it from amazon or e-bay. The toner cartridge for my laser printer (which I have not yet had to replace) is $13.78 from amazon, or $92.49 from Office-Depo, so get your toner cartridge from amazon or e-bay, not from an office supply store.

My computer(a windows 7 now windows 10) with monitor was $100 and the laser printer was $35 on black Friday at the local Good-Will store that specializes in computers.

That's true with Goodwill. Every county is different and they operate like a franchise. A franchisee runs all the stores in one county. Corporate headquarters is located in the Wash DC area where the CEO makes a ton of money.

Some of them offer a complete computer system for under $100. At least that's what a brochure said.

You can get a Brother duplex black/white laser printer on AMZ for $70 shipped (with toner). No bells/whistle but it lasts a long time.
"Compatible" no-brand toners sell for $19. At 3,500 pages per toner, that's 0.5 cents per page.

Try that with an inkjet.

Brother is a very good option I usually get my toner for 8-12$

I would get the cheapest Brother 2320 non-wireless B/W monolaser...great printer for the price. I bought one last month and have been more than pleased. "It's not an inkjet" is the only thing that I really cared about but the output of this printer is considerably better for less ink "blood money".

I`m glad I read this posting on printers. I have an Epson XP-424 printer that is not very old and it hasn`t printed good for quite awhile now even after a cleaning. Found a good price for the Brother 2320d printer on Amazon and just ordered it. $69.99 with free shipping.
