Finally found a solution that actually works, http://www.collobos.com/. It's not free, $19.99, but it works like a champ. And NO apps to install on any iOS devices at all, ever!
I almost pulled the trigger on print box that ran $99. Glad I didn't, for $19.99 this solution works well. Tried it on a Canon MP560, MP600 and HP LJ 4000, all work great.
The client software sits on a PC or Mac in your house, it does all the heavy lifting.
In our situation, the client software is installed on a Windows 8 PC. The HP Laserjet 4000 is set to print to an LPR port on a Windows 7 computer (enable byte counting) that prints to a private network. Works well for the simple setup of the Canons and the goofy setup of the HP.
It's nice when things work properly.
This software would be very useful in an office scenario too. Need to print an email? Web page? Receipt? Easy as 1-2-3.
"Nice beat, easy to dance to, I give it a ten."
