Hey guys, work friend just stopped by in his new ride (Guess he took the day off, too), a 1997 Grand Cherokee 4.0 4x4. Paid $1400 and all it needs currently is a new set of tires, the current Goodyear Tracker 2's are pretty low. He doesn't want to spend alot and got a quote from Tires Plus for Primewell PS830/850 for around $300 OTD. Size is 215/75/R15. I'm not worried about regular driving, but with winter coming up, will these be OK since he has 4x4, or will they completely suck? Thanks!

Doesn't look all that sipe-y.

Why not Wranglers (no suffix) from walmart in 235/75/15?

They can't be any worse than the uniroyal tiger paws that came on the Tracker. We did a few winters on them, mostly in 4wd though as in 2wd they weren't great in snow.
How many miles is he going to do in a year? I got some 75% snow tires for $80 and ran them for 25k miles year round and they still aged out before they wore out and they work well as a light duty off road tire.

No, keep looking. I would not consider a Primewell unless it was 50% less than standard tires and then you can expect to have issues that will bug you long after you have spent the money.

I see a lot of Primewell's for sale that are used in what looks like good condition with plenty of tread left. There is a reason that people give up on them early.

Welcome to another episode of Primewell's Driving He1l.

NO keep looking. I used to think "eh... how bad could they be" until I rode with my friend in a van he bought with that came with 3/4 tread Primewell, van was aligned and everything was good. Vehicle would slide and slip everywhere with the littlest bit of snow or rain.

Primewell is probably the absolute worst tire on the market. Chinese garbage that makes Maxxis or Kenda look like luxury tires. Uniroyals would be a huge step up.

Maybe the $300 would be better spent on a mass transit pass if your friend cannot afford basic maintenance. Tires are the only interface between a vehicle and the road.

If money is a concern, go to Walmart and have them install 235/75-15 GY Wrangler Radials. They aren't the best, but much better than the listed Primewell tires.

Friends dont let Friends buy primewells.

you can find at deal on some kumho road ventures etc for not that much more.

Yep they are made in china for bridgestone/firestone for them people that come in and say

I need some new black round things for my car.
CHEAP AS POSSIBLE

And thats what they get.

I happened to find 4 Kumho Solus KR21 for $63.00 each for a total of $252.00 from treaddepot.com. Are these any good? They carry an 85K warrenty!

I guess I will be the odd one here...I bought a set of 4 prime well ps 830 tires for my wife's 03 Honda Accord back in june. Got about 7500 miles on them now and they are doing fine. Quiet smooth ride, very comfortable and they do great in the rain. $340.00 out the door at Firestone and we are very satisfied. Yes there are better more expensive tires but the prime well are doing fine so far. We don't get snow here so I can't comment on that.

That Primewell would be my last choice. I'm sure they're safe in terms of they hold air and roll, but I have a pair of these on my trailer and there is ZERO tread siping on these tires. The tread blocks are extremely stiff, and there's no siping for water evacuation. And to top it off, they're technically directional tires, so he won't be able to keep them rotated as he should, at least not without dismounting them from the wheels. There's really no reason in my opinion to buy these.

Two good options for the money:

The Nexen Rodian HT at Walmart is $87 each, plus installation. He'll be looking at closer to $400 installed rather than $300, but these are FAR more appropriate for his Jeep. I'd even buy the $71 Goodyear Viva 2 before I bought the Primewells.

Next, looking at Firestonecompleteautocare.com, the Firestone Destination LE2 is only $12/tire more than the Primewell in this size. For 48 bucks, there is absolutely ZERO reason to buy these Primewells. If he can get the deal he's getting on the Primewells, he should check into the Destination LE2.

Third, which is really an extension of the one above, look in the discounts subforum; Indydriver posted a friends and family coupon good at any Firestone dealer; you can buy the tires at $1 over cost, which is a significant savings. The $104 Destination LE2s could probably be had for closer to $60-70 each. The catch? It's only January 3 through January 30. If he can wait until the 3rd, he'll get some good tires for not a lotta dough.

The AMC XJs came with 195/75-15 tires as original equipment!

The Focus I bought in August came on a new set of Primewells.
These are fine tires in terms of ride and handling.
They are great in the rain.
They may as well be at 2/32nds when dealing with ice and snow, which we got really early this year.
These tires are so bad that for the moment, I've left my Cali native DIL, the intended driver of this Focus in my wife's '09 Forester, have my wife driving my '12 Accord and I've been driving the Focus.
Directional stability is fine on a slick road and turn in seems okay. Braking is awful as is starting from a standing stop. Starting out uphill is an exercise in wheelspin, throttle feathering and hope.
These tires, although virtually new, will have to go.
I have never driven on tires less well suited to winter use.
Friends don't let friends buy Primewells for use in any area that experiences real winter.
