I need to purchase a new pair of prescription sunglasses in the very near future. The pair I use now was a house brand made in the local shop.

This time I would like to buy a name brand pair (e.g. Ray Ban, Bolle, Costa Del Mar, Maui Jim, etc.) and have true sunglass lenses with polarization. My eyes seem to have gotten more sensitive to the bright sunshine in the last couple of years.

Has anyone used a location that they can recommend?

I'm happy with my Ray Ban aviator style polarized prescription sunglasses. Got them from Lenscrafters years ago.

If you buy Rx Oakley sunglasses the lenses are made at the Oakley lab because they have a proprietary process (HDO). Their clear glasses are the "house brand" the local lab uses.

When you buy most others (sun or clear) they are still the same "house brand" lenses that the local lab uses, all you bought were that brand of frames.

Ask whomever you buy the glasses from who makes the lenses the lab is going to use.

I have polarized Rx lenses in some Rudy Project frames that I like quite a bit.

Tom's right about the lenses--they will just be whatever the lab has. If the lab does not carry polarized lenses, they will sub out the job to another lab that does. You just pick out the frames you like.

I didn't know about the Oakley lenses--there's always something to learn on BITOG.

Costco. Btw you can claim them on an FSA so they can be tax free too.

your lens severity and shape will affect which frames you could pick. many of the frames i liked for my prescription polarised ones weren't suitable.

Just for cost savings google LBW Eyewear for perscription glasses, anykind. You might be supprised at the prices.

I have a pair of aviator glasses with polarized and mirrored lenses. I picked them up at LensCrafters several years ago and think they're great. I have terrible eyesight and the lenses are thick due to their size but you really don't notice it with the heavy frames. I think they're Ray Bans but I'm not sure.

Cost is not the main concern. I am more worried about them being functional.

That being said, out here in the neverlands of West Texas I do not have access to all of the locations of a large city.

I suppose I should have been more specific in my question and I should have asked if anyone has done any business with a specific location that is reputable and able to do phone or internet transactions.

If you have a valid current prescription, all sorts of online companies will work with you.
Coastal Contacts is one of many.
I hope that you have good success.

I've internet ordered WileyX Rx safety glasses from WileyX with no issues. They sell Rx sunglasses also. Their prices are reasonable and they are a supplier/supporter of the US military.

I love my ray ban prescription shades. They are durable and super comfy. Much better than my normal Versache glasses which break from wind blowing on them. I blew god knows how much money on repairing them so many times. Stay away from them and just stick with Ray Ban or Oakleys. Solid build.

I got them from lenscrafters and used a $150 off coupon. This was several years ago though(2). My eyes haven't changed since I got contacts so I have been wearing them off and on.

Sounds like you want just prescription lenses, and if that's so, it's perfectly fine. You can probably stop reading now...

I'm 49 now, and found I very quickly became hypersensitive maybe 7-8 years ago. Almost since then, I've been using Cocoons. They're polarized glasses that fit neatly over your un-colored glasses. Since my un-colored glasses are pretty small and compact, I'm able to use cocoons in a small, not-totally-geeky fit-over size. I love this setup. I still have two glasses, but all I have to do is slip the Cocoons over the regulars when I go out. They work well, and have the added advantage of providing good "wrap around" capability. Google 'em if you're interested. They work very well for me.

Boy, being blind and living in West Texas, that's two strikes against you.

I have Ray Ban prescription sunglasses. They're polarized and have an antiglare coating. I paid alot of money for them, something like 2-300 - I can't quite recall how much was out of my pocket with insurance.

I personally will not drive in the daytime without them. Once you go polarized, you probably won't go back.

Well Johnny if anyone ever nailed the problem you sure did!!!!

Hate the area but the wages are more than I have ever made in my life.
