Prefilling oil FILTER contamination

Dirt dropping from the periphery of the mounting base on the engine is greater risk, especially if the new filter gasket has has a slightly larger diameter than the previous one. People often wipe that area, but wiping can make matters worse, if not done carefully.

I removed the large hanging burrs on my last 2 wix filters, then poured oil into the filter, always do and always will. Even horizontal mounted filters get a little oil to wet the filter element.
Evaluating other brands with better threads.

What some seem to over look is that oil filters have an anti drain back valve. Pre filling an oil filter is exactly the reason there is a valve. So the engine doesn't dry start. So saying you don't need to refill the oil filter is against the sole purpose of the ADBV.
And for the people that say, my filter mounts sideways, you can still fill it and let the oil absorb into the media. Same with cartridge filters.

I never change my filter, so I don't have to worry about it. (Just kidding). I always pre-fill. I don't like hearing the bearings knocking until the filter fills up.

I think the difference there is that the ADV prevents every start from having to refill an empty oil filter, rather than the far less frequent first start after an oil change.

I avoid the whole issue by simply motoring the engine for a few seconds using the clear flood mode before the first actual start. This will spin the pump long enough to fill the filter up without putting any significant load on the engine.

Nonsense.

You are screwing with threads a metal on metal interface. It generates wear particles, 100% certainty. Also certain: it doesn't matter. The particles are too small, too few to matter. There's residual oil on the filter spud that lubes the threads sufficiently-even if you "wipe it off" why a dry rag. You can't wipe off oil with a dry rag, you can only wipe off EXCESS oil, the film is still there.
