Prefilling oil FILTER contamination

Hi All!

Not trying to start another "pre-fill or not pre-fill oil filter" debate.
People have strong opinions on wether or not to do it, Im not looking to convince anyone either way.

Rather i have a specific question about possible contamination in one of the steps to pre-filling an oil filter before an oil change for those that choose to do this.

I should first start by saying i don't believe for a second that the oil coming out of the jug is "contaminated". People have done tests with data on this and shown the oil isn't contaminated coming from the jug. So thats not what Im talking about here at all. If you believe that, thats fine. But my question focuses more on the FILTER. Lets just assume the oil is clean coming out of the jug.

So I saw a video last night of a guy who was INSISTING that when you Pre fill the Oil FIlter, that its not the oil you have to worry about, its the contamination on the THREADS ,the METAL part of the oil filter where you pour oil in. In other words, when you pour oil in the filter like that, the oil goes past and through those contaminants in the threads and metal of the filter, and is now in the oil that you just poured in. That same oil will circulate through your engine BEFORE being filtered. For a minute this started making sense. But then it didn't. LOL

Because it seems as though if there are "contaminants" on the metal threading of the oil filter, once you screw it on, your oil is going to pass through those said contaminants on the threads of the oil filter anyway. I know there are people on this forum who know exactly how this works.

This is way more thought than I ever wanted to put into an oil change, but Im adamant about doing oil changes correctly on the CX5.

So am I missing something here? Is there truth to this or is it utter nonsense? Below is the video

The possibility of being struck by a meteor in your bedroom is not 0 percent. Anything is possible.
Not only has this happened to me, but I was IN my bedroom when it happened. And the meteorite struck me directly in the head.
And I survived! You math geniuses go ahead and calculate the odds on that.

Thats it! Thread closed! :ROFLMAO:

Oh youre right im sorry i didnt know that. I must be stupid. Thanks for your help..
You could pick up one of these handy things and transfer the oil without touching the threads. Some like this have markings on them so you know exactly how much went into your pre-fill. There are much more expensive scientific ones if you want to go all in.

Then your threads would be just like the non prefill group and can fall in while you screw it on. See no worries.

If there was debris inside the center tube and/or on the threads and that got into the center tube when prefilling the filter, then that debris would go into the engine on first startup. This is why I clean the threads, and also put a shop vacuum on the center tube before using any filter. I even remove the flat base gasket (don't mess with P-style gaskets) and clean out the groove of any paint over spray and clean the gasket - got into that habit from the yellow PureOne filter days that had tons of paint over spray in the gasket groove. I want the filter to be as clean as possible before use, and it doesn't take long to do. Yeah, probably too "technical" for some, lol.
