I’ve head varying opinions on preloading the 4L80E vs not when checking front end play. Meaning prying up on the output shaft when taking the front reading for endplay, of course accounting for snap ring float as well. Necessary or not?

The reason to make front unit endplay @.008" looser than rear unit endplay is to guarantee you have at least .008" endplay with the carriers pushing to the front.

So targeting .005-.008 front endplay more/greater than the rear endplay without prying up on the output shaft (not applying any “pre-load” when measuring front end pla) is the correct method then for measuring front unit endplay? Of course for when checking REAR endplay, prying up on the output is a must.
