I was looking at the product data sheets for PP & M1(5w30) and although some have said M1 is a thin 30 weight it appears that PP is even thinner. I also noticed that M1 meets the A1B1/A5B5 rating and PP meets only the A1 spec. Am I misreading this? Ed

Since I don't want anything to do with Mobil anymore, I would like to try out Pennzoil Platinum, but it comes in thicknesses that are too thin. My car is a MkIII (1986.5) Toyota Supra N/A that I installed the turbocharger on, with no oil cooler. This necessitates the use of synthetic oil (because I don't need any oil coking up on me), but 5w30 is too thin for that - right? Is my best bet to add a bottle of VSOT to the PP or to just put in rotella 5w40 HDEO syn and call it a day?

A5 is a long(er)-drain spec that is otherwise essentially the same as A1. The B variants are for light (automotive) diesel.

So it's like A1/B1?

ACEA A1 oil are fuel saving oils, but their quality level is low. ACEA A5 (and B5 for diesel engines) oils are very high quality oils that meet fuel economy standards and low emissions performance. They are no suitable for all engines.

SM Mobil-1 (regular) in 5w30 is not thin (11.3cSt@100)

Ok, so what you're saying is, basically anything above, what, 12 is considered thick? I'm not saying the current SM is "thick" but it is thicker than the SL, right?

Yes, basically. The mileage and HTHS requirements are the same for A1 & A5 (except that xW20 is allowed lower HTHS under A1. I'm not sure whether there is an A5-classified xW20). There are some shear stability and evaporative loss differences, as well as a difference in the max. allowable sulfated ash level. Most of these are pretty minor and are the differences necessary to make a long-drain oil vs. std. The whole chart is available in English at the infineum website, but for some idiotic reason the board thinks I'm trying to post a link with improper syntax.

7MGE? Any syn from 5w30 to 15w50 will work depending your cold start temps. Start with a good 10w30, and fine tune from there using oil pressure and temp.
