Ok,

Latest UOA with PP 5w-30 this time. Oil had a 04/2006 date on bottle.

90% HWY miles and 10% less than 2 miles trips. (picking/taking kids to events/school)

Supertech filter. Oil used was about 1/2 a quart I'd say (I did not add any but it was slightly down on the dipstick at oil change)

New Toyota Airfilter in at 90k. (The Fram airfilters do better than Toyota's)

Color was slighty darker than when it went it. So I guess its not doing its job since I've seen posts here state that Dark oil color means that the oil is working...

Temps from 50s to around Zero during this OCI. Car sits out all night and is started @ 5am for the trip home.

Of course, this data means nothing since it's only a $30 UOA.

Any comments? Thanks in advance.

Wow, check out Utah running a synthetic.

Bill the only valuable information this UOA provided you with is that you could probably go over 12k miles with this oil. PP upped the Ca. Tbn of this oil is 10. Looks great.

WOW, Bill! I've got some PP for my wife's '04 Corolla that I was going to put in for a 6 month OCI. This gives me the assurance it'll go that far with ease. There aren't many oils I've seen that don't do well in the 1ZZFE. It's safe to say that engine will still be putting out impressive UOAs when the only thing left IS the engine!

I'm just curious if PP still has that high amount of Ca in it, since your stock was nearly 2 years old. I don't recall any recent VOAs showing Ca that high. What did you have in the fill prior to the PP? That and your 5800 mile GTX prior to that look like the best you've had.

Another one for the hall of fame.

Let's see here... Answers are;

Thanks Buster. It was interesting that the oil did not shear and stayed close to the 30wt.

99 cents a quart GROUCHO

Excellent idea about making stores pay me to grace their location!

Pat, the previous fill was Halvoline 5w-30 DS for a 5k run.

Thanks for the comments.

I must say - your engines never show much wear in the UOA. The only accounting for this, beside Toyota, must be your driving style. We need to call you - Smooth Bill in Utah.

Hey Bill,

Thanks for the report, looks great as usual. The other ocis were all dino 5w30, as I recall. Could you fill us in on which oil was used on the previous UOAs (just a list from left to right would do)?

It's probably going to gouge his wallet!

I do seem to have excellent UOAs (for a low $$ UOA
48.gif
) but I do think that my changing the oil early then often the first couple of OCI did not hurt the life of the motor.

(But on the other hand, my Ford posted some good numbers (between head gasket leaks
06.gif
) and it was a Rent-A-Car and we all know that Hertz changes oil early and often...

Just call me Mr Smooth
thumbsup2.gif

(AND, we will not call my Wife (who drives these cars too) Mrs Smooth. We will call her Typical driver. (as she put the Toyota into a snow bank (or like the UHP like to call a "slide off") twice last season with snow tires on it...

I think she drives like she does just to make sure she collects on the Life insurance some day...

Bill, wasn't your previous run Pennzoil?

Nope, Lets do the OCI math!
grin2.gif

98,900
6,900 miles with PP (this UOA)

Equals

92,000
6,000 miles with Halvoline DS

equals

86,000
5,000 miles with Halvoline DS ( I had a case of Halvoline that I bought on sale and 2 OCIs with the Toyota and one with the Subaru = gone. Did a UOA with the Halvoline in the Subaru and posted it here.)

equals
81,000 (where the last UOA was performed with a run of Pennzoil conventional)

Lets see... (Got to go get the book...)

Left to right. (also I have many Butler UOAs not listed here. From 12k to 70k all my UOAs were Butler which are not listed here. Those incl runs with Mobil driveclean, Mobil 1, Castrol Syntec, Syntec Blend, GTX and QS. )

But back to the question... Latest to early..

PP 5w-30, Pennzoil Conventional 5w-30, Castrol GTX 5w-30, Blend of Castrol Syntec and Syntec Blend (50/50) 5w-30, Castrol Blend 5w-30, Factory fill.

So a few of them were Conventional, Blends, Blend plus Syn and Syn.

Take care, bill

PS: Picked up another 6 quarts of PP today for 99 cents a quart...

Where were you when the old Amsoil TSO went from 11 to 12.5 cSt? Didn't matter!!

Great report as always Bill! I wonder if my (old) Matrix is still running as well as your Corolla is
grin2.gif

I'll be putting PP in the Ecotec 2.2 tomorrow morning...almost 21K on it since May

I'd bet it is still doing excellent numbers.

Your HHR is up there too.

The major thing is todays engines with most any oil is going to do fine. (Turbos or high performance engines not incl)

When I look at all of this stuff (Syn vs conventional vs UOAs vs OCIs) I think we all are wasting $$ and effort..
48.gif

Yet, here I am!
crazy2.gif

I know pre-BITOG I never did a UOA or other than trying a Syn for a OCI (to see if I did get any better MPG or performance increase) or two then going back to my under a buck conventional oil for 200+ K miles with never an issue.

I know in the past 5-6 years, I have prob spent *more* $$ on UOAs than ALL the oil I used in 25 years of driving.

Yet, here is another UOA!
crazy2.gif

At least, unlike many here, I do try and use BOTH oils and run the tests. Otherwise, PUT my $$ where my mouth is.

Oh well.
thankyou2.gif

Take care, bill

And it did not.

I think it *may* have caused a little MPG hit, but other than that I know all is well.

With this run of PP, my MPG *did* drop. (now, to be honest the winter blends / snow tires could have come into play. But I have NEVER had this much of a hit.)

I also went to PP in the Subaru and it has taken a drop in MPG also.

(also to be honest (Pablo and I have PM'd each other about this) I did have the tires replaced due to the accident AND winter blends have come into play. BUT 5 MPG WORST MPG in the Subaru with PP, winter blend fuel, new tires VS stock tires, Halvoline DS and August/September temps/fuel)
21.gif

(we will see come late March about both cars and the MPG hit)

But back to your original comment about people getting their panties in a bunch over the cSt going from 11 to 12.5

IT DOES NOT MATTER IMO.

Take care, Bill

Another fantastic report, didn't expect any less though! Thanks for all the contributions, Bill. Always enjoy reading your posts & seeing your UOA's.

I'm glad you still spend your money on UOAs Bill, they are always awesome! If we had a UOA "walk of fame" on here, you'd have a star on there for sure! :)

Bill is one of the most rational people on here, despite our differences of opinion on synthe

tics.
