Power Steering fluid question

I flushed the PS system on my old IROC Camaro by disconnecting the return line to the pump and letting it flow into a drain pan, and keeping the pump reservoir full, and just let it pump the new stuff in until the return line ran clear. I know the thing calls for Dex3, but instead I used a 50/50 mix of Valvoline Maxlife PS fluid and Valvoline Synpower PS fluid. That was a couple years ago. Still works just fine.

My neighbor said he just changed out the fluid in his old Mustang with brake fluid since he didn't have PS fluid ?!? I said that didn't sound like the right thing to do, but he said they're both hydraulic systems so it's no problem. Should he get it out of there?

He he get it out of of the power steering system ASAP, he may need to do more than 1 flush to completely get all the brake fluid out of steering system.

Brake fluid is used only in brake system, nothing else. If he doesn't have power steering fluid then he can use transmission fluid as substitute, but not brake fluid.

Brake fluid is a PAG product, PSF and ATF are petroleum products. If brake fluid is used where a petroleum product is needed, the seals will swell up until they fail.

Get it out!

Get a gallon of cheap Dex to flush the brake fluid out. I'd do it in two double sessions, a week apart.

Buy 3-4 quarts of DEX and start sucking out via the turkey baster. Refill with fresh DEX. Start the engine, turn the wheel lock to lock several times. Hold it locked in a few times, shut the engine off and repeat until you've flushed everything out. Put in a dose of Auto-RX,drive the recommended mileage and flush the system again. There isn't much more you can do. Maybe not enough damage was done to kill the PS system.

Change out ASAP, do not drive the car!

Thanks - this isn't his commuter car so I don't think he has driven it anywhere this week. I convinced him to flush it out a few times with ATF.

For PS systems call for ATF. Dear Lord, I cannot believe he put brake fluid in there!
