The OP didn't answer the question if he finally drilled the two holes the in correct wall for his wife.

I've got plenty of tools. I'd rather inbest in tools than blow my money on drinking, smoking and gambling and it's therapeutic when I can fix something myself.

I still have an old (15+ years) Ryobi drill and mini saw that uses 14.4 NiCads. Original batteries were shot years ago and replacements are just about impossible to find. I only get about 15 minutes of usage which is more than enough for most of the projects I do. I did recently buy a Ryobi drill and impact driver set last year with the new lithium batteries and I really like them.

The Life Style I choose to live is as a Minimumalist / Do the most with the least.
I own (1) Corded Drill and (1) Battery Drill.

When I buy any Tools, I buy quality, 'without' all the bells & whistles.

I take great pride in fixing things around the house.
I see others NOT fixing their homes OR paying a Repair/Handyman.

This is also my threshold.

Pay someone $120,
or just buy the tools I need and HAVE THEM FOREVER for $120?

Tools wins every time....

I had a lot of holes to drill through 16" of reinforced concrete, renting one was an option but I would have to work like an animal or rent it multiple times, in any case it came to over $100. For $139 I got a Bosch refurbished SDS plus unit from CPO.
I don't see any signs of wear or use on it and it works perfectly another $40 on Hilti and Bosch bits on ebay and I own it forever. Since doing the work I needed to do now I find other jobs I want to do with it, i'm surprised at how much it is getting used, I would have bought 2 of them already in rental fees..

I bought a couple of other big specialty drill used like the old Milwaukee angle drill, its a real Milwaukee made in the USA in the time Milwaukee were owned by Atlas Copco and made high quality tools not the TTI Chinese made low quality stuff they sell under the once good name today.
The thing is huge and a beast $80 in perfect condition used with metal box. It is like this one only in much better shape, you can hardly tell it from new.

I suspect BITOG is a different crowd than the average HD or Ikea shopper.
I've rented things in the past that are either too expensive or too infrequently used:
- Moving truck, pickup truck
- electric jack hammer
- pressure washer

Just didn't give much thought to the transaction costs, but it's a bit of a pain to add 1.5-2 hrs to a long day's work, to get to the rental center twice. There's the additional problem of making it back to the rental center before closing time, no matter how South the job goes.

Pretty much everyone has rented expensive infrequently used tools. Renting inexpensive basic tools every household should already have isn't in the same universe.

A group here in MN saw this issue and created a non-profit organization called the Minnesota Tool Library. You just get a yearly membership and then you can "check out" the tools you need when you need them. It pretty much works just like a regular library except with tools instead of books. All their tools are either donated or purchased with donated money. They also have a workshop space available to use, and they offer DIY classes.
