Other thread about Germany's Autobahn reminded me of conversation Wife and I had couple days ago.

Seem that law officers are turning a blind eye to speeds that a few years ago would have gotten you put in jail. Can well remember when 58in a 55 would get you a ticket. Then 60, then 62. Now most posted 55 mph highways here in Arkansas, cops don't even look at you untill you go over 65. 70 MPH interstate will get you run over if you aren't running 80!

Have allways used radar detectors and pushed to the limit, so I'm really enjoying lax enforcement. What are generalities in other areas? States?

San Francisco Bay Area:

City: People drive 45-55 in 35 mph zones. Doing 45 in a 25 mph residential area will possibly get you pulled over. Stopping at stop signs is optional. Rolling stops (aka California stops) are common, with the one who accelerates fastest crossing first. Not blinking is not an offense. Double parking is swell. Using two lanes isn't discouraged. 360° turns in 4-way stops are cool, too.

Freeway: 65 in 55 mph zones is low average. I see people go over 80 all the time. Cops don't care. Most Cops don't use their blinkers anymore, by the way.

Many cops don't care unless the driver or car look ratty or fishy. I actually see very few cops out there. They might be stretched thinly.

It's Bedlam out there.

20km/h over the limit is common here. On the highway I will go about 105km\h because I find that I get noticeably better mileage than if I was going 120.
 
Here on I-5 and 405, it seems you can go about as fast as you want to, until the cops decide to spend a few days pulling people over. Then you'll see half a dozen vehicles pulled over within 5 miles or so. It doesn't seem to make anybody drive much slower, people seem to be comfortable going 70 or better in a 60. I usually go about 5-7 over the limit on the highways, but try to stay at or below the limit in neighborhoods, not wanting to run over anybody's kids or pets. And around here, cops seem to enjoy parking in side roads and waiting to catch speeders with radar.
 
Here, in the Sacramento Metro Area:

City: Enforcement appears to be quite strict. More than 5 mph over the posted speed limit puts you at serious risk for a citation.

Hwy: Traffic seems to hover between 70-75 mph here (5-10 over limit). More than 75, you are at a much greater risk of being cited.

Up here its the same way. See plenty of cops sitting, parked in the comedian, either studying for the sergeants' exam or sleeping from doing too many details as the cahs wizz by. Enforcement only after a fatal, and then only for a couple of days. I'll bet this will get your attention, state cops up here can make $200,000/year. Yes... you read that right. Nice "work"if you can get it.

Here in NJ...

City: Cops profile, friend got pulled over all the time for driving a beat up-looking sentra, now that he drives a different car he hasn't been pulled over once. He drove both cars the same amount of time, in the sentra he got pulled over at least 5 times.

Highway: I see almost no cops at all on my 30 mile stretch of highway roads I frequent. I'll see maybe 1 person a week pulled over. Whenever I do see a cop he's out in the open where you can see him. They like to camp out where it goes from a 65 to a 55.

Otherwise, I hate the cops around here. I heard too many stories of various cops getting drunk and vandalizing houses, breaking into peoples sheds or beach houses, and stealing. All cops speed, they all run lights by turning their sirens on, I've seen a cop talking on his cellphone before, they all tailgate, one lied to a friend and told him he wasn't going to be charged for something but then found out months later he was charged, no cops use their blinkers, they stop at stop signs and sort through papers and such while im waiting behind them, they'll slow down to a stop without using their blinker or hazards (i'm stuck behind them going 5 mph while they're looking for a place to park, if I passed them they'd pull me over for sure), some have an additude (sister honked at a cop because the cop couldn't make up his mind on where to park, she honked at him, he honked pack!), the list goes on and on.

Not all are bad, some cops are friendly, only a couple though.
 
There's a reason everyone from CA is moving to CO

I'll gladly trade a couple grand in salary for world class fly fishing not more than an hour and a half drive from the office. A snowall would have a better chance in #@$%! than I would in Cali.

I hate fishing. It stinks. It's wet and nasty. Not cool at all in my book. Oh, and I hate cold weather.

At the same time, most of my friends don't go boating the summer either, for enjoyment.

BTW, the guys in SF thinks that we're "hill-billies" out here in Sacramento. No joke.

However regions of CA offer such activities and even areas with colder weather than CO...that's the beauty of this state IMO.
