post your latest transmission lubricant change.

Just bought a 2009 Scion xB 5-speed manual with 146K miles. Not sure the fluid had ever been changed because it was much darker than normal gear oil and smelled a little burnt. When I did my old Corolla at 90K the oil I drained looked almost new so I’m glad I changed it. I used Valvoline conventional 75w-90 gear oil. I did the motor oil at the same time and it was some dark, dark stuff.

I got a new fluid extractor so I decided to put it to use.

I was able to get 4.5 quarts out of my Silverado, replaced with Maxlife ATF. 36,000 miles. It has the 6L80, and pulling the pan is a PITA, so I’ll drop the pan at the next change after I suck it out first to help with the mess.

I was able to get 2.5 quarts out of my wife’s XC90, replaced with Maxlife ATF. 65,000 miles. It has the Aisin 8 speed that takes WS. These units aren’t very picky about fluid. Since I got out so little, I’m probably going to do a few more changes over the next couple of weeks.

MityVac for the win! I had no time to pull and clean the drain plug. Perhaps a little more fluid would have drained.

Redline mt90 in my 2016 Tacoma 5 speed manual. This is the old mt90 coming out after 30k. I typically do the whole driveline every 30k. Rear diff and trans are always dark. T-case and front axle always look new, but I do it anyways since I do a good amount of off-roading with water crossings. I’m always surprised people will go 200k without ever having done oil changes on their differentials or transmissions.

2017 Golf GTI Performance with MQ350/02Q manual transmission (52,000 km, no known issues)

out: Castrol Syntrans V-FE 75W-80 GL-4
in: 2.0 l OE VW G 052 527 (which is a 70W-75 or 75W GL-4) + 0.5 l Castrol Syntrans V-FE 75W-80
drain plug: custom made magnetic

Gear oil had about 42,000 km and four years. Shifting feels slightly different now. No second
gear crunch (so far not a single time even when cold), however feels a tad stiffer when warm
compared to Castrol Syntrans V-FE 75W-80, which isn't what I expected.
I'd love to know if slightly overfilling has some influence on shifting. Factory total fill is 2.3 l,
changing supposed to be 2.15 l, while I pured 2.5 l in. Recent MQ350 transmissions lack the fill
plug, so you have to remove a plastic bolt and fill from there from which one's no longer limited
to the former 2,15/2.3 l.
